Ok so my SIL is pregnant and although I am overjoyed for her, I looked at her registry (registered at Pottery Barn and Babies R US) and about died. She registered for an $1,200 dresser for the baby among other things. Also she put on there 2 diaper bags from pottery barn that are $160 each! We decided that with our budget we couldn't afford the higher priced items per say but wanted something that would be put to good use. we decided on the stroller/ infant car seat combo and paid 1/4 of the dresser cost. Now, DH and I are not parents and don't have kids, but does the expensive stuff really matter? I feel like its a little gift grabby? I may be wrong, but is it normal to be a little put off by her astronomically high choices?

@KM nothing other than it's smaller and something you will have to throw out when your kids get older. They also make baby furniture that convert and can grow with the child.

Yea I hate it were looking for wise priced items for our baby registry. My gf has a $400 organic mattress and $30 organic sheets and a stroller car seat system for $1800

I don't think there is much of a difference, other than a baby dresser may have a cutout or cubby holes for the diapers and lotions and things in place of a top dresser drawer, just under the dresser top

I agree with the convertible cribs. That's practical for me cause the baby can grow with it. that's around $600 which is reasonable to me... but some of the stuff she has, $80 curtain panels and she needs 4? ah people. But its giving me an idea of what I wont be doing.

You can totally repurpose a regular dresser to make a "baby dresser"

One of my best friends did this - they registered for super high priced items. But, I expected it as she did the same for her wedding. I took it in stride, I bought her a "Baby's First" Christmas ornament, an outfit I liked from Marshall's, and a funny bib. I was not going to drop $175 on a designer DIAPER POUCH oh no not the diaper bag a damn POUCH just for holding 3 diapers...

@Future Mrs Gee That was a generous gift! I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. That is one of the greatest gifts, a car seat gets used every single day!

I was just clarifying why someone MIGHT list high price items, at least this is why we did it haha.

Eh. I think it's kind of silly to judge people's registry of any kind. Do they NEED that stuff? Probably not, but not one is making you buy it. I feel like registries are just a wish list of things and people can take it or leave it. Personally, I always like to get bath stuff (tub, robe, washcloths, burts bees stuff...etc).

I just think and cant believe how many people look at the brand name vs quality sometimes. There are so much better options for the things and I feel like its a "gimme gimme" at this point. Pkus the family just finished our wedding and were sooo generous. They all showed up to ours vs hers so I think that isn't helping.

@ Katy- I get it and I am not trying to judge, I just think its crazy sometimes the "wish" lists people have and are expecting people to purchase vs. buying them on their own. I am al for registries but there could be a more reasonable option/options wrapped in there too.

An 1800 dollar stroller and car seat system????????? Is it that stroller that collapses and sets itself up with the touch of a button and can charge your iphone and whatever? That stroller alone is like 1k. Sheesh.

I think it's a a 1st time parent thing. You get caught up in all the cute stuff. Things like cute diaper bags, $1200 dresser, fancy bottles and diaper genies. Then after all of that the present you will love, use, and need the most is the one that only cost $20.

Laura: the 4moms stroller! It's awesome! I would totally get it if I had the income to justify it.

One of my sorority sisters got pregnant senior year of college, so we decided to throw her a baby shower. Here were two 21 year old kids living in college dorms, no job prospects or money, and her registry featured probably the most expensive stuff they could find! My go-to (group) gift is usually a pack and play--the one on their registry was probably $400! I nearly died. I think I collected $150 from the other girls and went to Target and got her one that was on sale for $90 and then a ton of other stuff. When she opened the present, she actually said "oh, this isn't the one we wanted...but I guess Graco is pretty good." I wanted to slap her.

Sorry to steal your rant with my rant, but I feel your pain! lol

I mean, yeah, it IS crazy. I hope they at least registered for a variety of price points if they expect to get anything. Also, yes, a baby could sleep in a drawer, but that wouldn't be a very fun baby shower now would it? LOL.

@ Rosemary- such a helpful list!

@ Katy- eh their price points are either a couple items under $100 and the rest way over. And coincidentally I slept in a drawer (not shut) and a diaper box for a couple months when they brought me home. They had just adopted me and were clueless about cribs. I remind my mom of this when she tells me to have a baby..
