NWR: BCBS cancelling insurance out of the blue??

Rach, on April 4, 2014 at 9:20 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 19

It happened to a coworker of mine recently...he took his son to the doctor only to find out BCBS had cancelled his insurance months ago with no notification. This morning, FH found out BCBS had cancelled his back in December and we had no idea. What the heck?! I'm furious right now! We are trying to contact them now.

Has anyone else experienced this and can maybe shed some light?

Umm ... they can't really do that. i'm thinking he maybe missed an enrollment date of some kind or there was an error. Has he still been paying out of his paycheck for the medical coverage?

Was it through work? Has he been paying premiums all this time?

He is self-employed and owns a business with his brothers. The premium comes out directly from the checking account every month. His mom handles the books and noticed that the checkbook was off from the bank statement. That's how she realized he wasn't covered. So, it looks like they quit charging her as well.

@Kate, his sister is his insurance agent so I hope he hasn't missed an enrollment. I'm not saying it's impossible, just unlikely.

I would definitely have the insurance agent call then and find out what is going on. it's possible that the automatic withdrawal was changed or stopped somehow, and then since he wasn't paying they stopped his coverage. but they still should have notified him somehow. something is weird there.

I actually work for Horizon BCBS of NJ. I have never heard of this. The only thing that I can think of is that an enrollment date was missed. Usually, with benefits through employers, you're reenrolled automatically and yearly enrollment date is when you're permitted to make changes to your insurance. With self-employment benefits, it would be different. Did you move and you just didn't get the piece of mail informing you? Do you have a HorizonBlue account? (It's were you can access your insurance information online) Do you by chance live in NJ? I could get a phone number for you.

@Kristenann, we are in GA unfortunately. I am beginning to wonder if he missed an enrollment date or something. We haven't moved, though, so we should have received any correspondence. We are waiting on them to call back, so hopefully we'll hear something soon. Have I mentioned TGIF?! It's been a week from hell!

BTW- thanks for the help and suggestions, ladies! I can always count on y'all! Smiley smile

Obamacare changed a lot of plans and actually made some plans invalid because they weren't compliant. My brother's got cancelled too but at least he was notified. That's the only thing I can think of.

@DisneyNut, I thought of that too. I just don't understand why we weren't notified. He just got his appendix taken out in November, so thank goodness it didn't happen a month earlier!

The entire health care system has been overhauled recently, all the federal laws have changed, if she received a letter that had quotes from the law in it, she may have discarded it. Youll have to open a new plan.

You may have heard something about obamacare in the news, or heard something about health insurance in the news, or noticed that all blue collar workers who were full time have been switched to part time due to the health care laws changing, and companies not wanting to cover the new expense, switching everyone to part time. Thats kind of why the government shut down last year if you remember that.

Both my fiance and I had our plans cancelled because they didn't meet the new requirements of Obamacare. Our old plans worked great for us and were actually affordable. We loved our doctors and our co pays were great. Deductibles and out of pocket maxes were also very reasonable. The new plan they wanted to switch us to had less coverage and was twice as expensive. The out of pocket max and deductible were also twice what our previous plans were. Neither of us qualified for a subsidy (we wouldn't want one anyway). We did NOT sign up for Obamacare but we had a friend refer us to an insurance broker who was able to find us a mediocre plan (compared to our old ones) for about 20% more than we used to pay. We signed up with her (It's through United Health) and it meets the ACA requirements. Although, I just had a doctor's check up and it was $35 compared to my $20 co pay and my birth control pills now cost $45 instead of $10. It's more expensive than what we used to have but a lot less expensive than anything Obamacare offered. I'd shop around off of the exchange and with an insurance broker if I were you.

That sucks. Sorry, hope it gets resolved soon.

I agree with DisneyNut & the rest of the ladies because of the insurance enrollment and Obama Care made different insurance with different policies etc.

I definitely think ObamaCare had something to do with it. I just don't understand why we weren't notified.

Neema, did they send you a letter in advance letting you know your plan would be cancelled?

Hi Rach, Yes, we both received letters in the mail but to be honest, they looked like junk mail or something that you would just throw away. I think they should have had a big red stamp that said "OPEN! Important info about your health care" or something similar. I almost tossed them out since they were generic looking. It was more of a letter saying that the plans we were on were being cancelled and if we wanted to continue our insurance, we would be automatically switched into the new plans which cost double. I'm glad we did read and do the research. From what I hear, there are a lot of off-exchange plans out there, you just have to shop around. Good luck! (Sorry for the delayed response, I'm still new to this whole WW thing!!)

I read a couple months ago about some insurance companies having a computer glitch and some people had polices cancelled by accident without notice.

I am still on my parents insurance and my dad's work just switched everyone to a new plan because of the new laws and it cost a bit more but I think covered more. I wish my BC pills were covered fully they went from $30 to $35 but I have the one brand that is not covered 100%

FH has BCBS through his mom's employer. I hope they weren't affected!

Hmm. Neema, your birth control should not have a copay. I would call your insurance company, or even your broker, and ask.

It definitely does have a co pay and I already called. Everything on this new plan is twice what it used to cost. I'll only be on the pill for another year, so I'll just suck up the costs until then. Thanks though!
