NWR: Birthcontrol help for mood swings

SoontobeMrs., on March 22, 2017 at 10:19 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 18

Hi ladies, Has anyone experienced a birth control that doesn't turn you into a crazy psychopath? My PMS is out of control. Mood swings, increased appetite, the works! I was on Yaz last and it made me have crazy mood swings. It's not all in my head I was documenting it. Lol

Birth control affects everyone differently. Talk to your doctor, not an Internet forum.

My gynecologist recommended IUDs for me for this very reason.

I'm on Nexplanon, but BC is definitely a "different strokes for different folks" thing.

I found that it was helpful to address my concerns with my doctor and see what they recommended.

I understand the mood swings though. I had a breakdown over my cat "looking at me funny."

I'd talk to your doctor. I ended up just switching the pill after trying an IUD for 2 month and then had it removed (every side effect you could get I got and it sucked, don't recommend getting one at all). I'm on lutera now and have no complaints!

Yeah, it's so hard to recommend something because everyone reacts differently. After having terrible mood swings and other side effects on two different BCs I switched to Nuvaring and love it. However my friend was on Nuvaring before and suffered terrible mood swings, irritability, and decreased sex drive (yuck). It's just trial and error really :/

I actually recommend an IUD if your doctor says it could be a good fit for you. IUDs definitely aren't for everyone, but I have Mirena and haven't had a single problem. No bad cramps, I have normal periods, no babies!! lol I love it. No issues and only some hormones. But this is totally what you and your doctor think. My only warning: it hurts like hell going in, but 3 minutes of pain is worth 5 years of protection. I've had it for about 2 years now. Quick Edit: as a PP mentioned, nuvaring kills your sex drive. Maybe other birth controls do the same, but the years I was on Nuvaring I gained (a lot of) weight that I'm now trying to lose and it kills sex drive.

I've been switched through a couple different prescriptions (actually put on birth control originally to counter my PMDD) because it made things worse instead of better, and my body chemistry ended up shifting a couple years back, creating a need for a new prescription.

Best person to ask would be your gyno Smiley winking

Birth control affects people differently - that's why there's so many options on the market with varying reviews re: mood swings! For me, it was trial and error and close contact with my gyno. The birth control that made me a hormonal mess is the same exact birth control my best friend uses everyday. To each their own.

Talk with your doctor. I was on Ortho Cyclen for about 8 months before I had to call it quits as I thought I was going crazy. I then tried the Nuva Ring and loved that I didn't have to remember a pill. But after about a year and half my sex drive was non existant. I then tried the Copper IUD and I would never recommend it to anyone. My doc told me to wait at least 3 months to see if the side effects subsided but they never did. I had horrible periods and random cramps that would leave me doubled over in pain. Working in customer service I could not randomly clutch my stomach and try to breathe through it. It was awful. I have now been on Lutera or Famina (my pharmacy will substitute them if one isn't available. No crazy hormones, no weight gain, no difference in sex drive. My periods are lighter and only last about 4 days. I still have cramps but nothing compared to before birth control or the cramps I had on the IUD.

See, I went off Yaz for a bit to save some money and THEN started having mood swings and cramps. Yaz actually keeps me sane. Everyone is different. Talk to your doctor and experiment with different options. It will take some time, but you'll find something you like eventually.

I would definitely talk with your doctor. I had tried a couple different types of BC and they both gave me horrible headaches that wouldn't go away, I gained a lot of weight, and had really bad mood swings. Now I've been on Yaz for a couple years and I haven't had many issues at all.

Yeah, you definitely have to play around with a few types to find your Goldilocks BC if you're having issues. I mentioned on the other BC thread, I started using the same brand my sister had, and while it worked really well for her, it made me depressed. I found ortho cyclen works best for me, I don't have any major symptoms, but I have heard several people tell me they can't stand it for themselves.

@LindseyO oh have I tried. I've talked to 3 diff doctors. They all say to keep trying different types. They don't really seem concerned at all.

I would cry all the time on Yaz. I switched to Lo Loestrin FE and it has been a Godsend! No mood swings, no monthly cycle, no cramps, no acne, no weight gain.

Talk to your doc. My pills were never an issue but I switched to an IUD because I wanted decreased hormones. Cramps at first but no complaints now. Also - no more period! Yay

I am on the drop shot. I got every 3 months to get a shot in my hip. I have been on it for 2 years now and do not have any issues at all! I don't have periods anymore (yay), no cramping, no mood swings, no weight gain. I absolutely love it! I lucked out by finding something that worked well for me on my first try.

*i was on it for 3 years before, then got off it for 2 before getting back on it. When my gyno asked why I got off it the first time (I had to switch gynos because I moved), I told her that I had been told if you are on it for more than 3 years it can cause infertility. She did reassure me this is NOT true! I am so happy I won't have to switch in a year!
