NWR: Calling someone the wrong name on purpose?

I have a coworker who purposely calls me the wrong name, even though he clearly knows what my actual name is. Others who work with us constantly correct him. I heard him tell someone last week that he knows my name, but he just calls me by this other name instead. This is weird, right? I've ignored...

I've ignored it. We don't directly interact together for work related reasons, but we work in the same office. He usually will come around my area to say "how's it going" or to purposely bother me about something non work relaed. Based on his other behavior, I know that him calling me the wrong name is just trying to stir me up (he is succeeding, from this post, but I don't want to cause a scene at the office). I like my job, but I dislike working with this certain person.

My boss does that constantly to our clients... I'm surprised half of them don't fire us over it because you can tell they get annoyed at having to correct him and then he just doesn't care. For example- we have a client named "Justine" but he keeps calling her "Justin" ... clearly she is a WOMAN not a man! Ughh soo annoying!!

I have a difficult to pronounce first name. When people (whom I have told the correct pronunciation to), say it wrong, I do one of 2 things:

    1. If it's someone I like and can joke with, I say "what did you call me?" With 'THAT' look on my face.

    2. If it's anyone else, I ignore them until they say it correctly. And if they say something like "didn't you hear me calling you?" "No, I heard you call for an Alaina. Since that's not my name, I didn't respond to it". Usually stops them from doing it again.

If I may ask, what is he calling you? I'm just curious.

See, I'm not so nice....I would just call him "Dickhead". " Good morning Dickhead, have a nice day!".....Then when he confronts you on it, just say "Oh, that's what everyone else calls you when your not around, I thought it was your name!! LOL

......kidding! Don't get yourself fired, but come on!..That's funny stuff right thereSmiley smile

If you haven't called him out on it, you have no right to go to HR. You need to tell him you dislike it and ask him to please call you by your right name if it bothers you and if he continues, THEN you can complain because unless you've asked him to stop, it's not really harrassment, it's just him thinking he's funny. This is, of course, assuming he's not calling you a name that is innappropriate or demeaning.. but if your name is Lisa and he's calling you Leann, you just need to speak up.

I had a teacher purposely mispronounce my name after I corrected her time and time again. I think it was just because I once corrected her when she mispronounced silhouette (she was an English teacher she should have known that) but if it is just a coworker I would suggest calling him out on it and asking him why.

Or try a less confrontational, but still 'let's get this out in the open, "Hey, I notice you have trouble remembering my name? Is there anything I can do to help?"
