NWR: Cyst on Ovary

Michelle, on November 28, 2011 at 9:47 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 37

So about 2 weeks ago I had an ultrasound done because of some pain I felt in my lower left stomach area. I was told I have a cyst on my ovary the size of a tennis ball... this is a little scary for me.

I take BC and don't get cysts typically... The Dr gave me a few options

1. Wait and see if it goes away (due to its size it may be unlikely)

2. See if it grows / ruptures - risk is - while we wait it could cut off the blood flow to my ovary and kill my ovary

3. Remove it with Surgery - which would more than likely end up with me losing my ovary

I go back on December 6th for a follow up scan to see whats happening.

I am wondering if any of you have dealt with this?

I haven't, but I have a friend who did. Her's was a little smaller in size, but those were her options pretty much exactly. She opted for surgery in the end. Tough decisions. I'm so sorry. I hope everything turns out well. Keep us posted. Thoughts and good vibes coming your way.

I had one not that big, the Dr. was going to put me on bc but I was already on it. She sent me to my obgyn (?) and he put me ibuprofen. He wanted me to take 800mg for a year. I then stopped my BC and did not take the ibuprofen and mine went away. Come to find out the bc pills where doing it. Good Luck.

Im on a low dose pill and have been for a long time. If it didn't hurt on and off I would t mind it staying there.

The only other 1 time I had one it was smaller and went away. This was years ago ( I realize I may have had others and not known) but I have been seeing my gyn every 6 months for the last 3 years and never found any others.

It's the size that scares me. It's basically the same size as my ovary.

    Thanks for the input ladies

I get them when every month whatever side releases an egg is the side I get one. They did an ultra sound and they stay small enough and go away on their own. I had a friend who had a bigger one and decided to wait for it to rupture, she said it hurt like hell but everything seems to be ok with her now.

I have had once cyst that ive known about it was very small only a few cm in size. It wentn away on it's own by the following month when I had an ultra sound. It is normal to get cysts and most go away on thier own but ones that big usually require surgery. Usually they give woman bc pills to get rid of them. I hope that it gets better for you Smiley laugh

This happened to my cousin. Your best bet is to get it out now, My cousin waited, the cyst ruptured, and now she can't have kids. If you want children, I say do the surgery. This is not an uncommon thing with women. A few others in my family have had this problem and they got the surgery and has had no problems(that I know of). Cysts can be scary, but I think you would rather be safe than sorry. I have a few medical problems with my uterus and ovaries, so I know it can be scary, but if you listen to your doctor and do as much research as possible on the subject, it should help you make a better decision for yourself. Good luck and hang in there!

I have one about 1/2 the size of yours. It's been there for at least 8 years. Hurts maybe 1 out of 3 months around my period, but no other problems with it. I'm not going to get surgery unless it causes issues.

Sorry to hear this. I know how you feel. I actually have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS). I have had it since I was 17 but didn't get officially diagnosed until 2 years ago. I have cyst of all sizes on my ovaries causing me to go (sometimes) up to a year without a period. I have had 2 cyst rupture and the first time I was hospitalized b/c the doctor thought it was a kidney infection and sent me home. I have been told if I ever plan to have children that I will have to get them surgically removed but to only do it when I was 100% sure b/c within 3 months I would probly get pregnant.

I have PCOS and deal with Cysts on a normal basis, I think the best way to take care of this is to (unfortunately) get it surgically removed and lose the ovary, you will still have the right one, which would make you just as fertile as you were. I have had my cysts rupture before but have never had to be hospitalized and my doctor didn't use the term "surgically removed" like Taryns did, they use a tool that makes micro vibrations and "pop" them, being they form in my ovaries because my eggs don't mature all the way so they just make "blisters" in my ovaries.

Julie, did you lose that ovary? Thank you everyone. It's almost comforting knowing I'm not alone.

The dr said if he removes it - I will lose my ovary :/ he said he didn't want to jump right to surgery since I still want to have kids - but said we will decide next month

No I didn't lose an ovary, see I have fap, it means polups in my colon and they took out my colon, but the cysts on my ovaries, they just took out doing it , laporascophy, and they said I could get them again, but as of now I haven't. I do think each case is different, but I hope they dont have to take your ovary, sometimes they don't have too. Just think positivie, its what I always do.

Sorry you are going through this. It can be scary. About 18 years ago I had a ovarian cyst on my ovary that was larger than a grapefruit. It ruptured and was terribly painful before and right after the rupture. I had to have emergency surgery to get it removed (went for an ultrasound at 10 and was in surgery at 2P). They did have to take part of the ovary but I was able to get pregnant (whoopsi). Edubb and I loss the baby but had nothing to do with the ovary.

I would talk to your FH, doctor, and other people in your life that you trust. An ovarian cyst is not an infertility sentence. Look at all the options for removal. If you have a medical school near you, consider going there for information/treatment. They tend to be aware of and have the latest, less invasive techniques for all kinds of treatments.

Good luck and I'll be praying for you.

Im soooo sorry your going through this. Its definitely NOT an easy process.

I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrom) and get them all of the time. When I first found out that I had it, I had 2 cysts on my left ovary, each the size of a golfball and was told I'd probably never have children because of this. That being said, I was put on the depo shot (bc it stops your ovulation cycle completely and you only get your period once every 3 months--which is a beautiful thing!!!) The Depo actually improved the size of the cysts and within 2 weeks they dissolved (as opposed to rupturing or having to have them removed surgically). I was on the depo for 2 years and for 2 years I was cyst free. I was off the depo (and on Ortho-Cyclin BC pills) for 4 months and got pregnant! As much as they say that having cysts is an infertility sentence, it definitely is NOT!!! I have a beautiful 18 month old daughter. Definitely talk to your doctor, family, FH, and even get second opinions. My second opinion..

...was able to save my ovaries and control the cysts that I get. Before having surgery DEFINITELY get opinions from other OBGYN's or Endocrynologists!

Thank you all for the advice and information.

I have seen my DR for 11 years and trust him but I think a second opinion is a good option.

I have been experiencing more pain and sort of a warm feeling where the cyst is the last two days and I am afraid it's a sign of something changing. Perhaps a rupture coming.

I will keep you posted. I dislike this!

I am not looking at it as a NO BABIES EVER situation but it's still freaking me out. I have an 11 year old son.. so I know the joys of parenting and my FH and I have agreed adoption isnt out of the question (even before this came up) I just don't like things going on inside of me that I can't control.

I really appreciate the help and prayers <3
