So about 2 weeks ago I had an ultrasound done because of some pain I felt in my lower left stomach area. I was told I have a cyst on my ovary the size of a tennis ball... this is a little scary for me. I take BC and don't get cysts typically... The Dr gave me a few options 1. Wait and see if it goes...

So about 2 weeks ago I had an ultrasound done because of some pain I felt in my lower left stomach area. I was told I have a cyst on my ovary the size of a tennis ball... this is a little scary for me.

I take BC and don't get cysts typically... The Dr gave me a few options

1. Wait and see if it goes away (due to its size it may be unlikely)

2. See if it grows / ruptures - risk is - while we wait it could cut off the blood flow to my ovary and kill my ovary

3. Remove it with Surgery - which would more than likely end up with me losing my ovary

I go back on December 6th for a follow up scan to see whats happening.

I am wondering if any of you have dealt with this?

I almost died because of this.

Early 2007 I started feeling the pain you are referring to and I thought it was cramps. A few days later it was so bad I couldn't stand up so I drove to the ER. Turns out the cyst (undetermined how big it actually was) had ruptured and completely severed the tube and ovary. I was bleeding out internally. Lost 4 pints of blood in my abdomen and had emergency surgery. I remember passing out and hitting my head on the sink in the bathroom at the hospital, woke up to find doctors over me telling my mom that if i didnt get to the OR asap, they would lose me, then I remember them rushing me to the OP because i had lost so much blood that I was almost to the point of brain damage. PLEASE PLEASE get another opinion or have it removed safely before it damages anything.

Doc said had they caught it early, they could've saved my ovary.

I have PCOS as well. Sometimes I feel abdominal pain, but I went for an ultrasound last year and I was told that everything was normal. I need to get another one done. Im kinda scared that I won't be able to have kids Smiley sad They said that if I lose weight, it may help. I've been working on it. I've lost about 10 lbs since the summer. How do you other woman w/ PCOS deal with your situation?

I have dealt with this personally, its a lovely gene my grandma passes down to all of us. So far almost every female in our family has had one that large and it popped and had to have EVERYTHING removed... So i would take it out now.

I haven't personally experienced this but one of my close friends and my mother have. My friend didn't realize she had the cyst until it ruptured.. it was quite a painful experience for a few days following, however, she is fine now (I dont think the cyst was very large). In my mom's case, she developed the cyst shortly after delivering me... they did have to do surgery, and she had an ovary removed. It wasn't complicated and she recovered fine... she made two more babies with zero complications afterwards Smiley smile Her left ovary was still functioning just fine!

Talk it over with FH, and get some further professional opinions...you'll know what the right thing is to do for you.

I was told for the first time when I was 7 months pregnant with my son 10 years ago about cysts. When I spoke to my mom about it she said it wasn't a big deal since they only appeared when she was pregnant & went away after giving birth with myself & others 4 siblings. To my suprise they only got worse & were getting larger rather than my son as I got further in my pregnancy. One ruptured when I was 9 months & at the time I was told my son was only 2 lbs. 14 oz. Long story short, I was heavy laden with steroids for him to develop faster and had to have an emergency C-section. I was told that they could not remove them at the time because I had 5 of them & would hemorrhage.

I say find out exactly what type of cyst you have so that you can take the appropriate actions because out of my 5, 2 were the size of grapefruits. They have caused me hell since they keep coming back. I have had all 3 types at one time (inside, outside and within the walls of) my uterus. 1 child 3 C-sections, a laparoscopy & a myomectomy later, I can say I trusted my doctor & he did excellent work (all others just wanted to give me a hysterectomy) God willing I will have at least one more child with my overworked right ovary that’s left =) then they can remove it all!

I have them matter of fact I get them very frequently. Sometimes they hurt other times not at all. They generally go away with time and come back during the monthly change.

I do however have a friend who also gets them frequently and is always getting them removed, she kept her tubes. To be with it being a frequent thing I wouldnt do removal. I have had 3 healthy children and even get cysts ( a little more painful) during pregnancy. Wishing you lots of luck. ANd hope this helps a little

I am sorry to hear that Michelle. I do not have any advice or information but just wanted to say you are in my thoughts. Scary thing, but it looks like a few ladies have gone through this (I had no idea this was so common). I hope you have a speedy recovery in whatever you decide and also no pain.

I am so sorry to you and everyone else who is going through or has gone through this. It is painful on every level. When I was 38, during the holiday season, I had recurring pain that I ignored. I was divorced and had a 4 year old and a 12 year old at the time, so of course, I ignored it. I didn't have the time to be sick. By mid January, the pain was extreme, I passed out with my 4 year old running about and had emergency surgery. It was the size of a grapefruit and I lost the ovary.

Get a second opinion ASAP. If the pain gets severe or you have a fever, go to the Emergency Room where you had the ultrasound done and tell them what you have and that you had it done there. Letting it go and having emergency surgery can be very dangerous.

In these situations, it is better to have it taken care of then to wait. If it is that big, chances are it is not going to go away by traditional medicinal methods.

I will keep you(and everyone) in my prayers.

Wow! I am so thankful for all of you sharing your stories with me. I am going to talk to my doctor and thankfully I live very close to a Cleveland Clinic (in Florida) I know we have top doctors only minutes away.

Can anyone who had one rupture tell me what they felt before it ruptured? I want to at least try to know the signs just in case.

I am not worried about losing one ovary nearly as much as I am worried about losing the whole "facility" ... Thanks again everyone. I truly appreciate the information and prayers.

@Future Mrs. Harris, I deal with mine with my doctor, he told me years ago that as long as nothing changes, I'll be alright so I don't really even think about it anymore, I used to go in every few months to get them checked to make sure they aren't larger or more there, but since I lost my medical insurance I haven't been in, I've been told that if I get my hypothyroidism in check it could help with it, and could even keep me from getting anymore cysts and make the ones I do have smaller...we'll see...

I have had lots of "female part" issues, including cervical cancer and cysts on my ovary (they were removed during my c-section, no issues).

I'm sorry you're going through this. I know it's scary.

I would say get it removed ASAP. If it ruptures there's a chance you could lose the ability to have children altogether. At least if you lose one ovary, you will still ovulate every other month and can still get pregnant, you just have to time it a little closer.

    Good luck!
