NWR: Febreze and Dog Pee Smell

Elizabeth, on September 13, 2016 at 11:04 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 29

Been using Febreze fabric refresher for the last few days and it seems to have reversed what I wanted it to do. I've used it before, but I never put two and two together- that after I use it, I can smell the nasty odors again mixed with Febreze. I've been spraying the cushions, etc. so they smell nice for our dog sitter while she stays at our house during our wedding. But now everything smells like dog pee again (they peed on the back side of the couch when potty training months ago). Neither of them have peed in the house in months, so I know it's not a new smell. I have a candle lit right next to me because I'm just sick of smelling the ick. When they pee on the carpet, I use vinegar and baking soda, which gets it out pretty well, but it's not like I can vinegar the entire house...

Anyway, what works best for neutralizing odors for you guys? We need to replace the carpet, which I know is part of the problem, but I'm at a loss with what else to do to make the house smell nice.

When we had a dog that had carpet accidents (thank goodness my dog now doesn't!), we always mixed equal parts warm water with distilled white vinegar. I wonder if you can mix up the same in a squirt bottle and use it on your couch? Vinegar seems to take that smell out of anything.

You could also try Nature's Miracle. Go to Petco or Petsmart and get a good product. The clerks will know exactly what you need.

White vinegar and water worked for us when our old cat got sick and started peeing.

Also, baking soda worked to neutralize the odor without the vinegar smell, if you can try that on your couch? We used it on carpet, but it worked more than any cleaners we bought.

I second @Going to the Chapel. Nature's Miracle is a lifesaver! We used that at my parent's house when they bought it. There was cat pee smell everywhere. Pulled it right up! It works on old and new messes

Get Resolve Pet Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner Foam. We use it and it works pretty well! As for the vinegar idea.. we had a skunk spray our house in January and we set up small bowls of vinegar to eliminate the air but also used Febreeze Heavy Duty, it's a little more expensive but worth it. We also made a mixture which could work on your carpets. 4 bottles of hydrogen peroxide with like 2 things of baking soda and a little bit of dawn dish soap, you mix it all up and boom it works wonders with getting rid of odors. We used it everywhere as well and it's the only thing that got a skunk smell away so I'm sure it will do the same to dog pee.

You need a multi enzyme product. It doesn't mask odors, it breaks them down. I'm not sure where you live, but find a janitorial sanitation support and ask for that.

As someone with 2 puppies, I'm 3rding Nature's Miracle. Also, for non-fabric stuff I'd recommend Clorox's Urine Destroyer. The name is not hyperbole.

Wee Away. It's the best and removes stains from carpets too. It can be gotten at All the Best Pet Care, other pet food stores and I believe also on Amazon

How did you guys use the Nature's Miracle? I've used it before, but only on small spots. Did you soak the couch or just spray consistently?

If you make the mistake of just trying different Febreze scents to deal with tough pet odors, you'll just end up hating the mixture of dog urine and perfume. You need products that actually attack and break down the source of the odor on an organic level.

First, make sure the affected areas are clean. Use an enzyme based product that actually breaks down the odor instead of masking it. "Nature's Miracle" actually advertises that it works well on organic pet odors:

You might also consider a product called Ozium. It is an air sanitizer, not an odor masker. Here's some information about it:

    https://www.amazon.com/Medo-OZM-1-Ozium-Air-Sanitizer/dp/B000CSWCAG

I think both sites include hundreds of user reviews -- and they look pretty impressive. Make sure you read a few.

Use vinegar and baking soda as a paste and let it sit on stains for a day or two then vacuum it up when it dries. Nature's Miracle might also work if you're trying to get out lots of stains on various upholstered items (but test it in an inconspicuous location first!).

Another vote for Nature's Miracle. We use the advanced formula. Our dog very occasionally has a little bit of anal gland leakage (I know it's gross, sorry) and it is the worst smell in the world. Nature's Miracle is the only thing that's been able to get it out. Let it soak then wipe.
