NWR: FW's gynecologist is homophobic.

Babz-n-Bre, on February 6, 2015 at 3:08 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 37

Pretty sure it reeks of discrimination... At FW's last gyno appointment, the doctor was adamant about having "in a lesbian relationship" added to her file. Initially I thought, hey, maybe they're trying to remind themselves not to ask if she's pregnant at every appointment. But then doctor says "Maybe you should try a boyfriend. Why no boyfriend?" ... Now I've been advising her to find another gyno for a few months now just because her doctor hasn't been the best at communication... Like she gave the post-surgery talk to FW, by herself, before she was completely awake from the anesthesia, and then taking off before giving her proper paperwork for aftercare. But now THIS is insulting. Here we are planning our wedding and this relative stranger is telling her she should be having sex with a man. Hello lady! Not your job!!

Seriously, time for a new doctor. The nerve of that person. I would also leave a negative Yelp review. Or even calling the practice group manager or whomever is above her.

    Good luck!

Why is this still her doctor then? If my doctor didn't mesh with my life, I would find someone that did.

That is really awful. I would definitely find a new doctor if I were her. I just don't get it when people think it's okay to mix their (bigoted) personal beliefs with their professional career. Gah!

I know it's normal for your gyn to ask about your sexual partners, but I never heard of them putting it on your chart. What if you're not in a relationship do they put that in the chart? Yeah I would find a new doctor.

Last time I had a gyno appointment, they asked if I was sexually active with men or women and they put it in my file. But it is so awful that she is telling your FW who to have sex with. Inappropriate and time for a new doctor.

I feel like that's severe enough that you should report it. I'm sure your FW isn't the only patient who's a lesbian and heard these remarks.

That is gross. It should be reported and she needs to find another person. Going to the gyno is bad enough all by itself......

I can understand a gynecologist asking if sexually active for the whole STD thing...beyond that it's none of their business wether it's with a penis or vagina and then voice their own (ignorant) opinion! How unethical!! I agree with Celia, report the quack! And find a new Dr...ASAP

Julia, yes. At least all of mine have. They take notes on your social status. Hell, even my neuorologist does that. I assume with the obgyn, it's so they can make better educated suggestions on your vaginal health.

Well, except for OP's FW's obgyn, that's just bizarre.

Does she work at a hospital or a larger practice? If so, I would immediately see if there was a supervisor or HR person you could talk to about this. That's just not okay.

It's a private office, and this doctor is "the boss". She hasn't changed yet because she has low-income coverage and it's a hassle to change providers, but I'm going to keep after her to get it changed.

Your FW should have replied, "Excuse me? What if I was your doctor and told you to get a girlfriend? Get a grip, woman!"

Can you report this doctor to the medical board? That seems so unethical it has to be some kind of censurable offense.
