NWR: health related: LPR or silent reflux

MrsNerd, on July 27, 2016 at 9:19 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 30

Now, I feel like sharing my health problems might be TMI, but people here seem to have lots of good advice - and sometimes talking to strangers online is easier than complaining to loved ones Smiley sad I have been having severe LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux). Basically acid reflux that is affecting my larynx. I've had to go on an incredibly strict diet to reverse the damage, steroids to reduce the swelling in my throat, and did I mention the strict diet where I CANT DRINK ANY ALCOHOL lol. Smiley sad

Anyone dealt with this? I'm supposed to be taking omeprazole (Prilosec) but it's given me some awful side effects. Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions. Or, post your food and wine pics so I can enjoy them vicariously!

I deal with acid reflux and have since I was young. When I was younger, My grandma used to mix baking soda, water, and honey together. I drank it twice a day and it worked similar to what you're taking.

Did you tell your physician about the side effects from the Prilosec? They can prescribe something else for you or give you actual medical advice. We can't give you medical advice (I'm not saying that's what you're looking for, just generally these threads can go a bit overboard).

I have Gerd (I think that's how it's spelt) and I just started taking Prilosec 10 MG omeprazole. The 20 MG gave me awful stomach issues, the 10 MG works well for me. On that I would speak to your primary care or a physician you trust. We caught it early, so I just have to be careful about eating certain foods and taking my medicine before I eat something I know will upset it.

I deal with GERD too, and have taken Prilosec 10mg/day for a couple of years now. Thankfully I haven't had any side effects. It helps me immensely, and I know within a day or two if I forget to put it in my vitamin box.

Some of my worst trigger foods are corn chips of any kind, but especially Fritos, tomato sauce (which I know is a common one), and of all things... Water. Water gives me reflux horribly!!! Coke or tea? I'm fine. Water always refluxes though. It sucks.

I've had GERD since I was 12 and I've just had to avoid triggers and take OTCs when necessary. They'd put me on Nexium when I first got symptoms but it gave me terrible headaches. I'm the opposite of @mna when it comes to caffeinated drinks. Coffee and Coke make me miserable. Tomato based sauce is okay for me now as long as it's not too spicy. I had to be on omeprazole a few months ago due to a really bad flare up but didn't have any side effects. I hope you and your docs can get it worked out!

I used to get crazy acid reflux but it was not normal. Chocolate milk used to be able to semi help. Now I rarely get it after having my son. For me when I had it though I learned my triggers. Now I just watch it with them. Like alcohol, I don't drink that much anymore.

Mary, was that before or after the kidney issues?

OP I'm sorry you are having an issue with the Prilosec. Have you asked your doctor about Nexium instead? Maybe a slightly different formula will do the trick.

I've been speaking to my doctor (I'm not solely seeking medical advice on the Internet lol). Basically, he said I need to be on a medication until the damage to my larynx is reversed, and they will all likely give me the same side effects (TMI ALERT: frequent UTI's). I can't have anything acidic, almost no fat (right now, not even healthy fats like nuts), no caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, etc. Just can't seem to find any relief from the "lump in my throat" feeling. Doctor said there isn't anything I can do but wait until the swelling gets better. I was wondering if anyone had any remedies or things that helped them.

Also, I was serious about showing me your food and drink pictures lol. I had baked chicken, steamed broccoli and brown rice for dinner. I need to see real food!

@mna it's true! My coworker told me her husband has reflux and can only drink Evian, because it had lower ph or something! I thought it was silly and brought a bottle home to FI, who has a saltwater fishtank and testing equipment. Turned out it was true. Most water, tap, etc can cause acid reflux if you have a problem already!

Have you looked in to aloe Vera juice? My dad and I both have very bad acid reflux and we are both able to stop medication when we drink this regularly (30 minutes before eating)

This is the one we use.

Edit: I would like to add my dad is very set in his ways and does not do many holistic things willingly, but this is something that he has added to his lifestyle.

Oh I forgot...grape juice and orange juice have been triggers in the past but now they make low acid OJ. I almost cried when it came out on the market.

@mna, I have the water thing too!! I thought it was the weirdest thing! Water alone doesn't do it, but if I drink a lot of it in one sitting...ugh.

I have stage D esophagitis Smiley sad i take omeprazole every day and have been for a couple years now. The best thing you could do is talk with your dr about taking something else.

My diet is supposed to be low FODMAP because I also have ibs but it actually seems to help both issues. ETA basically i felt like everything went to shit after my gall bladder was removed... but I'm rather fond if knowing i won't ever have another gall bladder/stone attack.

@Welch: yeah, I can drink just enough to take my nighttime meds, or a quick sip if I wake in the night and am thirsty, but like downing half a bottle of water? Oh hell no.

Weirdly, alcohol spent bother me usually either, except cinnamon stuff or vodka. Vodka tears up my stomach.

@mna- Yesssss and it sucks when its super hot out because I just want to drown myself in water lol. Vodka and some bubbly drinks for some reason give me intense, sometimes crippling heart/chest pain. No one can tell me why or what it is, just to avoid drinking those things. I've not really had many experiences with alcohol upsetting my Gerd at all though.

I recently found out I have a mild version of this. I have been taking medication for it for almost 2 months and am definitely feeling better. I can also notice when I forget to take my medicine (like this week it's at my home with my FH and I'm staying with my mom after her surgery).

I hope you can find something that helps you. Hopefully the damage can be reversed so you can find a better medicine to take. I know that just my mild version of it is terrible to deal with so I can only imagine what you're going through.

No real advice here, just sending me thoughts to you and hoe you're feeling better and can find a resolution soon!

ETA: it's insane to me to see how many people deal with this. I honestly thought I was crazy and alone when I was feeling that "lump" in my chest. I hope this doesn't sound mean, I'm just happy to know there are others out there with this.

@SarahAnn ugh I'm sorry you're dealing with that. This started last fall, I went to a million doctors and they were talking about Barrett's esophagus (not sure if that's 100% the same). I hope your medicine and diet help and you feel better.

@FutureMrsR I came here to commiserate so it's all good! Haha I'm sorry so many other ppl feel like crap too, but misery loves company! I just wish I could swallow, and stop coughing. I don't have any heartburn or stomach pain, it's all up in my throat. I also wish I could have coffee a bagel right now, but instead it's decaf green tea, dry toast and melon. Meh.

ETA: thank you all for your advice!

I THOUGHT I had acidic reflux.

After some scans, I don't. I have a hiatal hernia. So, in order for it not to get worse and explode, I take meds every morning (like Prilosec), don't eat much after 6pm, and eat clean.

    Have y'all seen your doctor?

When mine started, I thought it was bronchitis. Then as it got worse I thought it was asthma! Doctor put me on a nebulizer. I'd been loading up on vitamin c and tea with lemon - making the problem worse for weeks. I had no idea it could be a stomach problem since I had no heartburn or stomach pain!
