Now, I feel like sharing my health problems might be TMI, but people here seem to have lots of good advice - and sometimes talking to strangers online is easier than complaining to loved ones Smiley sad I have been having severe LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflux). Basically acid reflux that is affecting my larynx. I've had to go on an incredibly strict diet to reverse the damage, steroids to reduce the swelling in my throat, and did I mention the strict diet where I CANT DRINK ANY ALCOHOL lol. Smiley sad

Anyone dealt with this? I'm supposed to be taking omeprazole (Prilosec) but it's given me some awful side effects. Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions. Or, post your food and wine pics so I can enjoy them vicariously!

The weird thing was that i didn't even realize that what i was experiencing was reflux or heartburn!

One thing that's made a world of difference is I quit smoking. I try to stay good on the diet and when I am it's so much better. It's really hard to stick to sometimes, but worth it when i do.

I hope you find a solution soon too! digestive/GI issues are no fun at all. Smiley sad

Talk to your dr about side effects. I've heard nexium is quite effective albeit expensive depending on your insurance. Keep up with the diet though and I would keep looking for causes of the underlying reflux issue.

E-Tex: my doctor is the one who originally put me on Prilosec, so yes, I have seen him repeatedly and extensively.

I started on Zantac, which worked for awhile, then had to be upped to twice per day, which helped for a while, and then the Prilosec, which has worked well for a couple of years.

They have looked at ulcers, but nothing. They have found nothing except I reflux stomach contents when I lay down. Laying on my left side helps, which is pretty classic for GERD, right side makes it worse. Again, classic GERD.

I'm pretty sure my issue is GERD.

Futuremrsnerd: sounds like you have been aspirating it. That sucks big time. If I forget meds too long, I end up with a very hoarse voice from the acid. Smiley sad

Me too @mna! and end up feeling the need to clear my throat incessantly. also the same with the sleeping on my left side being ok but forget laying on my right . . . now i feel like i should go have another talk with my dr. basically for the past year it's been "still taking the omeprazole regularly? Still helping? OK then" . . . i can definitely tell if i haven't taken it in a couple of days.

@mna yeah, basically the acid is so far up that it's "splashing onto my larynx", which sounds horrifying and gross but is how my doctor put it. Sorry for ruining everyone's day with that visual lol.

No worries on the visual, I've felt it often enough to know exactly what you mean. :/

I always hate it when people try to tell me I should drink more water. I want to smack them, because then I just end up with watered down acid refluxing. :/

Instead, I drink a lot of tea, which is better than soda of course, or I do drink soda when it's really bad. For some reason, Coke really helps when it's bad.

DS had to have a fundoplication as an infant, while he was in the NICU after he was born due to reflux issues. I imagine that could be an option for me, but the thought of not being able to vomit should it be necessary frightens me to the point of preferring to deal with the acid. Lol. I remember how miserable DS was from it: he had to be force burped because he couldn't on his own, and when he got a stomach virus bad enough that it make him vomit, it was SO painful for him. Smiley sad At least his loosened as he grew. I wouldn't have that opportunity.

I'll live with the GERD. :/

I'm having iced tea with lemon! It helps too.

It seems acidic drinks are the most helpful, lol. Go figure!
