Ok, long story short....we found a house, had a contract down on it and in that contract we stated we wanted a new roof on, sellers agreed. Then they came back with a friend from church as the person who was going to put it on, we said no we want a licensed roofing company. They came back with a contracting company whos services on their website did not include roofing. We again said, a licensed roofing company and they refused so we walked away from the house. The sellers were making it way too difficult for it being a buyers market and I felt like all the trouble was a sign that wasnt the house for us.

So we began looking again....we found one we loved last night but it has no fireplace. I love our fireplace in our apartment now and am having a hard time deciding if this one thing is a deal breaker when I like everything else (its not for FH)!!

What do you all think...fireplace a necessity or not, and why???

You can check out home depot to find an electric fireplace to add one in your home.

We have a fireplace and in the 4 years we have lived here have never used it. As far as santa goes, you get a magic santa key and place it on the outside of your door, they are super cute and have cute poems on them

One chick, our friends have one of those fireplaces from Home Depot, it is wonderful. looks real, they roll it into their bedroom when it is really cold. We keep saying we will get one of those or a tv with the mantle around it and play the fireplace video on it. Gas or wood I never use it and have had both. I also had an elect. log but never used it either. I would rather have a wall to put my couch against.

Our santa came in the hood range, up the water pipes. The kids were not happy when their friends santa came in the door when they were sleeping. So we did not go that route.

I was just going to recommend an electric fire place! We have one... and it's pretty... but we bought it from the previous tenant who ripped us off completely, there is visible water damage to it (like it was sitting in the basement when it flooded or something) so we can't actually use it. But it is pretty... and will give us a spot to hang out stockings!

I love them but it would not be a deal breaker for me as you can always add one in the future.. Anything can be changed in a house or added.

Wow thank you ladies!! I love all of the Santa ideas and will definitely have to look into the electric fireplace idea!! Do those electric fireplaces make your electric bill sky rocket though??

Our pellet stove insert barely moves our electric bill, but it saves us a TON because we only have to buy oil for the hot water instead of heat as well.

How often do you use your fireplace? If you'll use it regularly, I say wait for the perfect house to come along, fireplace and all.

If you just like looking at it but you don't use it often, buy the house that you found.

Thanks Lindsay, that is good to know!

Christina, we have probably have 1 fire per weekend in the cold months (Oct-March). The house does have a fire pit in the backyard so I guess that could work for some nights....

If this is going to be your "forever" home then you could always have a gas fireplace installed, or you can purchase an electric fireplace.

It most likely wont be our "forever" home since it is our first home, but it will be our home for at least 5 years I would imagine...been doing some research on the gas and electric fireplaces and they seem like great alternatives Smiley smile

Ooooh I'm a sucker for fireplaces, too! But I don't think it would be a deal breaker for me.

My fiancé and I just bought our first condo together. When looking for places we never really thought “oh does it have a fireplace.” We would’ve totally bought something without one. Our condo does have a fireplace and we’ve used it a few times, but if the place we got didn’t have one, I still would’ve made the decision to end up here.

There are alternative fireplaces you can get. I’ve seen people have the entertainment centers where they have the fake fireplace underneath. Or I’ve seen people buy fake fireplaces and set them in the living room. They look really cute! If you love this place (and it looks really nice) go for it and get one of the alternative fake fireplaces : )
