NWR: is this a crazy idea for a baby shower?

Laura, on June 24, 2010 at 2:22 PM Posted in Married Life 0 17

Some background: I skipped out on having a bridal shower. I would LOVE to skip the baby shower but I know I can't get away with it twice (MIL still mad at me), plus to be honest we could use some help getting baby stuff. I hate sitting for an hour while everyone watches me open gifts, I hate the "cheesy" quality of what you're "supposed" to do with stupid embarrassing games, typical crepe paper decor, baby stuff everywhere as if it's a kid's birthday party, etc....plus we do not get along with our families so generally it means having a party with a bunch of people I don't like. LOL We have decided we need to have the shower far away from us to be closer to most of the guests. This means we will have to ask for gift cards or for gifts to be mailed to us. We've decided to have a joint shower, men and women. Now where to have this party and what the heck to do at it if not opening gifts and goofy baby games?? What do you think of having it at Dave and Busters? Drinks, pool, and games?

I thin that sounds fun! And the men are more likely to come (they like games & i believe there is beer. always a plus for dudes) LOL.

Do what you want. people who love you and want to be there will!

P.s. not sure anyone likes babyshower games.heehee. EXCEPT the one where you hand out diapers, and they get to write you "nice" notes, like HA HA LAURA I AM SLEEPING..for those middle night changes.

A GREAT idea I have implented is having your thankyou card envelopes in a basket w/ a pen, asking people to write their name/add on them as a way to "sign in"..saves you time later Smiley smile

I think your idea is way more fun then a standard shower. I hate having to put a bowl on my head and in my lap trying to get cotton balls from one to another. Haha. I'd much rather go to a place like Dave & Buster's. I am an Arcade gal. When we were in Gatlinburg when we got engaged he had to drag me to the truck. I was going insane in that place, I needed more and more and more money for more and more tokens to win more and more tickets. LOL. I won over 7,000 tickets that night, the most I'd ever won in an arcade and we only spent $32.00 (The limit was $30 but he had just $2 when I needed a few more tix to get my Mom this cute apple thingy for her kitchen so I was liek OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE. LOL. He laughed at me, he said I looked like a kid in a candy store.

If MIL has a b!tch fit over Dave & Busters (my fave!), why not do a themed baby shower? Something like classic black & white movies - where the goal is to be sophisticated instead of cheesy

The last shower I went to was a BBQ swim party with both sexes there. The gifts were put in the living room and forgotten about. We had a potluck and everyone but the mother to be was drinking and then all left and she took the gifts home. Was great for all she did not have to sit thru opening the gift and neither did we.

Seriously! That is the most awesome idea ever! I hate having our wedding shower and having to open all sorts of gifts in front of everyone! Our Childs God Parent is going to throw the baby shower and because we have to do it when i am about 7 months it wont be as fun with all the games. I seirously am going to talk to her about going to dave and busters and see what she says! So we can still have fun instead of making it all about baby making it abot everyone and support system! =]]]

I think thats a great idea. Im so glad I didnt have the typical baby shower. We just had friends round a big barbecue there were gifts but I wasnt expected to open them in front of everyone and we all joked around since it was all his navy buddies and their partners.

We booked the hall at Ryans steak house and men were welcome to join, BUT they didnt lol! Guess they didnt feel right coming to a baby shower, it would be fun though if the men you invite are up for it!

And btw- I also hated opening up gifts! Its very awkward and for some odd reason made me feel un-deserving. (may seem weird but it just did.)

My only problem here might end being the expense. I'm waiting to hear back from D&B's. Just like with every single other thing in our lives, DH and I are fully paying for and hosting the event. That means it could end up defeating the whole purpose if we end up spending so much on the shower that the gifts don't end up helping us out! LOL I thought D&Bs would make the men more likely to come ya know? Guess I have to hear what the estimate will be. This would be so much easier if we actually liked more than 5% of the people invited! *sigh*

Who the heck came up w/the idea of showers anyway!? Probably some MIL feeling left out thing "haha, this will show YOU!".

I'm trying to avoid a wedding shower as well. Living half way across the country and only being in town shortly before the wedding helps w/that. Although our friends here are having a "couple's brunch" for us on Sunday w/biscuits and gravy! Anyway D&B sounds great, can I come?
