NWR- IUD AGONY- when does it stop hurting?

LuckyAK, on May 6, 2017 at 8:17 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 43

I got the copper IUD inserted today and I almost blacked out from the pain. FYI I've never had any children and am not on my cycle because my insurance is over next week so I couldn't wait. But it's seriously so much more painful than I expected. I could hardly drive myself home and I've been curled up in bed for 7 hours. I usually have a high pain tolerance- did anyone else experience this? What did you do to help? Holy fahk.

It took me like 3 days to be able to function and then I cramped for another week or two. Then it all stopped and I never get a period or cramps really. Cramps maybe once every three months and little to no bleeding for like one day every three months. You won't regret it

I'm sorry you all had to go through this too but it helps to know that this is normal. I knew it would hurt but this was next level. My legs were shaking when I got up and I almost threw up.

Did your Dr check the placement for you or will they in a day or two? If you told them you were going to be out of insurance they would probably have checked it because if it doesnt set right you will need to go back and have it re-done. Saying from experience since my first one was for the same reasons.

And yeah it hurts a lot, more so if you have never had children. It will pass, but for you get a heating pad or something warm and keep it on your stomach, drink tea and broth so it is lighter in your stomach than heavy foods. You'll probably spot/state your period early so make sure you are prepared for some bleeding. When mine got replaced last year I bled heavily for most of the day it was inserted.

Lay down when you can and try not to hunch over for a day or two - the bending will put pressure on the tender areas inside from the insertion.

ETA: Did your Dr have you take pain meds before they inserted it? Most advise a pain reliever 30 minutes before your appt and then take as needed for the next few days.

My IUD was extremely painful too but it's so worth it. I have mirena and love it.

It'll be over in a few days.

Did they have you take anything before you got it? I took 1000mg of something (Advil maybe? It was so long ago) and my GYN told me she should have given me a vicadon but thought I could handle it. I cried when it was inserted and went right home. Spent the 3 days in bed taking whatever again every whatever hours was recommended on the bottle. Good luck. I hope you feel better sooner than I did!

Thanks- I took Advil before I went in. They did check the placement via sonogram afterwards to make sure it was okay. They had to do a sonogram before also because last time I had one done it looked like my uterus was actually smaller than the IUD, meaning it probably wouldn't work. Thankfully it showed up larger this time- I was not going to let her do it if there was only a 25% chance it would go in, only to have to get it taken out again. I guess I have a "small uterus". All this for peace of mind- I just kept telling myself that women have been doing this throughout history and if those medieval ladies did it with pebbles and no medical care I could surely survive it but..:mannnnn. It's funny now but at one point I was actually thinking "DO IT FOR YOUR ANCESTORS". Lol.

I don't have a copper IUD but I did have a Mirena as my first form of birth control. It was agony for about 3 days but then got better. I bled for like 30 days and then pretty much stopped for years. I now have a skyla and had much less pain and pretty regular spotting.

Thanks everyone. Even though it's not a wedding related thing it's so comforting to have a supportive community to talk to!

I had a copper IUD for almost 6 years ... first it hurt for a few days ... I personally could feel it when I wore tampons which sucked ... but when we decide for a 3rd child (she's almost 8 months ) they took it out in 10 seconds I spotted a little and got pregnant in less then a month... I loved it ..

I must be the odd sheep but I HATED mine. It was in 2 months and every side effect you could have I had. I would say wait it out for at least 2 weeks and then weigh your options.

Hope it works out for you!!

Okay so as someone thinking about switching to an IUD, this totally scared me! But even though it was incredibly painful do you regret getting the IUD?

The copper IUD was the worst pain I've ever experienced, above any surgeries and a very severe kidney infection. I could barely drive home from the dr's office when I had it inserted. Luckily, I only lived 4 minutes away. The same pain and heavy bleeding lasted about 5 days, but it does get better. I just took Extra Strength Tylenol (since I can't take Ibuprofen). Aside from pain meds, you kinda just have to wait it out. After a couple weeks, the pain was pretty much gone but I had painful, extremely heavy periods but only for the next 3 months. It went back to normal after that.

I actually had to have it removed because my body was trying to reject it and I was getting horrible infections, which eventually led to my life threatening kidney infection. I'm not trying to scare you, sorry. They are successful for many women. I'm just prone to infections, and IUD's are not advisable for people who are prone. I just didn't know it at the time.

Yes I had pain after insertion. Ibuprofen and heating pad and rest. You'll feel better in a couple of days and you won't have to think about birth control.

I'm sure everyone's situation is slightly different I actually went and I had mine done on a lunch break and went back to work, I've had one child. Stick with ibuprofen for pain relief . If pain lasts longer than a couple days check with the Dr if that's not enough for pain relief because it may be misplaced.

I have the Mirena. I took two painkillers before it was inserted and I didn't feel any pain that day. Next day I had some cramping but nothing serious. Everyone is different. It will pass.
