NWR- IUD AGONY- when does it stop hurting?

I got the copper IUD inserted today and I almost blacked out from the pain. FYI I've never had any children and am not on my cycle because my insurance is over next week so I couldn't wait. But it's seriously so much more painful than I expected. I could hardly drive myself home and I've been curled up in bed for 7 hours. I usually have a high pain tolerance- did anyone else experience this? What did you do to help? Holy fahk.

I had the copper iud after my first- I took me a few month before I stopped having painful periods-

But it was so worth it - I had one for 16 years- no regrets

Wow. Why?!? I've never had one and it sounds like from pp that it's the norm but if it were me, I'd think my body was seriously rejecting it

I had mine in for over 2 weeks before I scheduled an emergency appointment to have it removed because of the pain, bleeding and other side effects...

Everyone seems to react differently. Give it some time and reach out to your doctor if it doesn't improve.

I got the Mirena and it hurt worse putting it in then it did having my children. I was in bed the whole day and even threw up from the pain. I hurt for weeks and called my doctor like 3 times I just knew it wasn't normal. My pain subsided after about two and a half weeks and was pain-free after about a month I think everybody's different but I understand what you're going through and it completely sucks but it will go away. Take an anti-inflammatory and that will help. Best of luck

I almost passed out and threw up initially. I slept all day the day I got it inserted. After that first day, I didn't have any memorable cramping for three years. Just recently, I had to get mine removed because it was making me sick. I had cramps for three weeks, threw up, had terrible mood swings, etc. It was amazing while it worked for me though. The pain goes away.

My doc did a cervical block before the procedure so I went home feeling ok, but within a few hours the numbing wore off and I had terrible pain. Luckily I had a tab or two of Vicodin left over from when I sprained my ankle and took that which made it much better. I only had minimal cramping the next few days. I think it's worth it. No periods, no cramps, no remembering to take a pill...

Ashley- thank you that's good to know. I kept feeling like I was weak or something because it was so bad, I kept thinking I'd never be able to handle childbirth if I couldn't withstand this- but my mom was telling me that having your cervix forced open like that is totally shocking to your system and that childbirth is natural so your body tolerates it differently. I don't know what it is with these things that spikes women's pain=inferiority complexes but you, and all these responses as well have made me feel much more- I guess validated? In my pain, and not like it's something to be embarrassed about...nor should it discourage me from having kids eventually. Wow ladies.

To the woman who asked about if it was still worth it- I can't really say since it's day one. I'm glad the worst is over with and if I go on to be able to not have to worry about getting pregnant without horrible side effects until I'm ready then yes, I think so- but if I knew what this would actually be like I probably would have been too scared to do it. I don't think I could do it again knowing what it feels like.

I also like the fact that my FH and I will be basically forced to really consider the timing of having kids. I'm a spur of the moment type of person and part of me feels like after a few glasses of wine I'd totally throw caution to the wind once we were married before we were really ready. So it's an added layer of security for me. I respond horribly to hormones so the copper was really the only thing I felt comfortable doing.

Did they give you meds to dilate you a little? I would have died without them lol

I was semi-functional the next day and pain-free within a week. It was hideous pain to start with though. I took a lot of Tylenol PM and slept a lot right at first.

Mine was rough too and I only had a skyla placed. It's been three years and now out... not great timing since I get married soon (Nuva ring has been great y'all!) But I about passed out after placement, mind you I'm a nurse with a high pain tolerance also. I spent 2-3 days in bed cramping awful. But it gets better and worth it.

@Felicia no! They didn't give me anything to dilate me. In fact they described it to me as "minor discomfort". Minor discomfort my ASS!!!

Yeah childbirth is way different! Your body preps for 9 months, your cervix softens and dilates and prepares to push a baby OUT. I had the nexplanon for 3 years after my youngest and have had mirena about 3 ish months. So my cervix was dormant. So yeah having something SHOVED in spur of the moment SUCKED ASS! He said "youll feel a little pinch." I clenched EVERYTHING halfway through. The nurse goes "now honey its not that bad" BITCH. IT IS THAT BAD! LOL

Well worth it though. I cant remember to take a vitamin everyday so this has been great for me so far. After the initial shock of course. I cussed my Dr. For the first week. Lol

I got Skyla almost 3 years ago. I took a Motrin before insertion & it really helped when I was on my period since I was opened a bit more. I experienced a little cramping over the next week & I noticed that during weeks that I was supposed to have my period the cramps returned. My doctor told me that cramping and discomfort was normal for about 3 months after insertion.

@luckyAK I'm sorry! I almost passed out too with the paraguard....with the meds to dilate me for the skyla it was much better. Also the skyla iud smaller and meant for women who haven't had babies or haven't had them naturally! I don't think they should be allowed to say its a minor pain cause it's not lol

I have 0 tolerance for pain, and the only pain I experienced when I got my mirena was the actual insertion. I didn't feel anything afterwards, I would call your OB and check to see if this kind of pain is normal.
