NWR: Kennedy Space Center

Kimi, on September 8, 2016 at 9:33 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 10

DH & I are driving to KW for our honeymoon from Va (in Dec). I'm not a big fan of driving, I've always just flown. However, it's definitely cheaper for two to drive. We plan on splitting the trip up into several days, as I just can't be in the truck for more than 6-8 hours a day.

One of our planned stops is Patrick AFB/Cape Canaveral. We would like to visit the Kennedy Space Center but don't know if it's worth the price of admission ($75) for the amount of time we could spend there. Theoretically, we could do 4-6 hours at the center, then hit the road to the Keys (6 more hours driving).

If anyone has visited, please share your experience. Especially if you would or would not recommend doing it.

I thought it was cool the 2 times Ive been. I was also under 14 both times so take that into account. My dad (an adult obviously) loved it and really wanted to go back.

There are some attraction/simulator things that are pretty cool and some exhibits and walkthrough things. More of a museum than a park.

But its been awhile since I was there. They could have added things.

I haven't been since MS, and we went for one of the shuttle launches. I remember it being fun, but for $75 you could almost get into Disney World for the day. That's a lot of money, and I don't know how much they have to do there now that they shut down the shuttle programs. But it might be worth it if you are really into that stuff.

I went there on a cruise excursion when we stopped at port canaveral, I loved it! I don't know if everyone gets too or if it was just for the cruise, but we had a bus tour that took you out to the launch pads. If you have any interest at all in space you will like it. I think 4-6 hours is enough time there.

@Laura everyone can. Its one of their attractions. I Remeber learning that alligators can climb fences from a tour guide on that shuttle! That is why all the fanses around there and the everglades have curved tops!

@melody I remember that too and they couldn't have sensor doors that open automatically!

If you guys are super into space/science and are really excited about going, then go. You will not need more than a few hours. It was cool, but even my super nerdy FH was a bit disappointed. He had been when we was young and said it was way better then. I'd look for coupons and discounts, maybe it would be worth it then!

I've gone in the past year or two and thought it was awesome. They have one of the actual shuttles out where you can see it, as well as a bunch of rockets. Definitely take the bus tour. Depending on timing, you can speak to astronauts or hear engineers talk about their current space projects. If you have time, the astronaut hall of fame (included in admission price) is also really cool and has some fun interactive things.

It's been years since I went, but I loved it. I know you can get different admission packages for different stuff there, and most of it is worth it. A PP mentioned the bus tour, which was one of my faves. They take you fairly close to the launch pad which was probably the coolest part imo. Very neat experience there overall though =)

I've been, but that was years ago. I happened to be there when they launched at Titan rocket to put a satellite into space. It was amazing. I really enjoyed the museum as well, if that's your thing.

ETA, I agree with Brittany in that, if space isn't totally your thing, you could spend the same amount to get into Disney for the day. Or Busch Gardens. Or Universal Studios.

Thanks for all of the input. I guess we'll decide when we get closer.

I have absolutely no desire to visit Disney. The only one I've been to is in Tokyo, but that was as a teenager. I don't really like crowds.

We have season passes to our Busch Gardens (but I won't go on weekends because of the crowds) & they are the ones that work at both parks. It just wouldn't be worth it to us to only get to spend a few hours there. We're also not looking to take that kind of detour off of our main route.

I'm not super into space, but do like museums like that. We live near Langley/NASA and have the NASA Air & Space Museum near us.

DH would also like to visit Darlington. I may investigate that further.
