NWR: Ladies with IUDs

Margaret, on March 30, 2015 at 6:53 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 21

Anyone with an IUD every have it turn inside you? Like completely upside down? I'm trying to figure out why I've been having so much pain lately and went to urgent care yesterday. The did an x-ray on my abdomen and said my IUD was totally upside- down. Fast forward to this morning when they sent me to outpatient at the hospital for an ultrasound- IUD is totally normal.

Anyone ever have this happen to them? The IUD turning sumersaults inside you?

I have used IUD's for 6 1/2 years and haven't had that happen to me. I have heard of it coming out on it's on with some women.

My IUD (Mirena) pierced my uterine wall 6 or 7 years ago. But, it had to be removed.

It's not supposed to move. I'd go get another opinion, or see if you can have it removed.

Maybe I'm asking for TMI, but, can you feel the strings?

No-It is not supposed to move. Did you see the X-ray yourself?

Haven't seen any images myself, but 2 different drs and 3 lab techs saw the x-ray and at least 1 dr and 3 techs saw the u/s. I have never felt the strings so I don't know what its supposed to feel like.

@Geeky- when it pierced you, they saw it on an u/s I assume? If not, how did they determine that's what happened?

I've had one for 4 years, never had an issue other than some minor bleeding..

I don't understand the physics of it being upside down. It seems like it would be really painful where the "arms" are if it twisted, and where would the stem part go? Is your uterus even big enough for it to turn like that?

They saw it on an ultrasound. I had horrible cramping, and bleeding.

You're supposed to check the strings monthly . I won't detail it here, but a quick Google will tell you how. I'd go have an exam done at your ob/gyn. It sounds like it isn't in properly.

Thanks. I can't see my ob/gyn until next week because she (and apparently half the staff) are out for spring break this week. They have no appointments for me all week. I go in next week. I ended up in urgent care this weekend (where they did the x-ray) because I was in so much pain. After getting my imagining and lab results back, all the doctor could say was "I have no idea, you'll just have to grin and bear it until you can see your dr". Sucks to hear that from a doc, but I guess that's what I have to do.

Thanks for your help and advice.

That's crazy, I can't imagine the pain. I have had mine for 2 years, and (maybe TMI) my Dr. always tells me to check for the strings once a month, right after my period, just to make sure it's in the right position. She says if I can't feel the strings that's not good :/ I hope everything turns out ok!

Omg! I can't imagine. If you plan to keep it after you see the doctor, ask him to show you how to feel for the string. TMI but FH has he can feel mine sometimes.

I don't want to crap all over every urgent care ever..... but take what they tell you at urgent care with a grain of salt. They have to diagnose a lot of people in a small amount of time and then they have you follow-up with your regular doctor. If you can't see your GYN could you make an appointment with your GP in the meantime?

I've had xrays of my iud, (for unrelated issues) and they DO look backwards/upside on the xrays. So is it possible that the xray tech wasn't aware? If it were truly upside down, it would show straight up, from my understanding. I could be wrong, but that's what my gyno told me.

Mine is placed too caudually in my uterus and there has been some pain, but I'm almost to the 5 year mark and then my fiance will get a vasectomy and so I'm gonna wait to have it removed. This is my 15th year of an IUD. I had a copper/10 year one before. My dr thinks my body just needs a break.

I had one, mine came out six months after they put it in. Was very painful. Hope all is well. Personally, I'd get it removed. Once mine came out, I was done and got something different.

Ive had mine for 2.5 years and never had a problem with it. Maybe the IUD just does not sit well with your body?! :/

I've been using IUD's for over 7 years now, and have not had any issue. One of my friends had a lot of pain immediately after getting it inserted and had to have it taken out a day or two later. I haven't heard of it flipping upside down before before, but I hope for your sake that you find an accurate answer soon! It is a good idea to check the strings every month of so though, like another poster mentioned.

Mine also fell out and I got pregnant. Less than six months from having it inserted. Never again

I have had two IUDs. My first i had in for almost exactly 1 year when it started coming out. I went to check the strings and i could feel it. They decided to pull it out and place a new one. I had the new Mirena placed a week later. All was fine for a while, but about 9 month in I started getting regular periods. I couldn't feel it like the last time, but i knew there was an issue. I went in and they did an ultrasound. It had started migrating South again. My obgyn tried to push it back up inside of me (effing PAINFUL) and in the process it flipped upside down inside my uterus. So she pulled it out... Now I'm on the pill. The point is... You would know if it had turned upside down on you. It is super painful.

Thanks for the advice ladies. Glad to hear I'm not alone in having issues with it. I finally get to see my gyn on Wednesday morning. If my issues ARE in fact caused by the IUD, I want it out ASAP.

I need to call the urgent care and the hospital that did the ultrasound last week to see if they can fax over the scans to my gyn so she can look over them and *hopefully* not have to do another ultrasound since I have one scheduled.

@Sky and HIH- it sounded like a great idea to me to not have to worry about anything and have basically heavy spotting for 3 days as a period. But, if its gonna cause the pain I was in last week, hellz no. Luckily, the pain has subsided considerably.
