NWR: Le Creuset or Lodge Dutch Oven?

Catti Labelle, on October 24, 2017 at 6:52 PM Posted in Registry 0 25

Hey all!

I love to cook and have been slowly building up my kitchen items over the past 2 years. However, there are a few things I want to add to my registry, like a Dutch oven. I know that the Le Creuset is the gold standard but I've read good things about Lodge. Any opinions on either? Especially with the big price difference?

Love Le Creuset! And it is a perfect wedding registry item because it is so expensive and nice that many people wouldn't get it for themselves, but other people would therefore like to give you it as a gift.

Either one is great IMO. Both are tried and true brands.

Le Creuset is my favorite but I have a Target dutch oven too and it works fine (it's a bit discolored but fine).

I have both and I always reach for my Le Creuset, though I can't exactly articulate why lol, I'm no help!

We registered for a lodge skillet and two Le Creuset Dutch ovens (one regular round and the other oval). I picked Le Creuset since they last forever (when properly taken care of). It is definitely a hefty price tag, but I have a decently well stocked kitchen over the past several years and in a Dutch oven I wanted something that would last -that was my attitude for most of the registry

I love/have both for different reasons. I use the Le Creuset for fish and cream based meals. Less stick, doesn't absorb fish smell. Lodge, however, is the my secret to a perfect roast. Nothing sears meat quite like cast iron.

I am the Le Creuset junkie lol. It's an addiction once you get hooked on it. Between the Le Creuset and lodge I would recommend the Le Creuset as @ Kate states it's an investment that will be passed down when you die to grandchildren. I am almost in my 60's and my MIL is still using the Le Creuset that her MIL had the original flame color. Pick a color you love though because you'll have it for life.

Love my Le Creuset! I have one Dutch oven that I use when entertaining or holidays, and a smaller pot that I like to make rice and stews in. Both have held up beautifully and they work great!

@Kate If you want the wok and ceramic wok serving dish for serving the rice order it soon they are going to be discontinuing it in the Caribbean blue soon. My DD and DIL have that color and I got them those for Xmas last year when I read they would stop being made in that color shortly after 2017.

Of note on Le Creuset - certain colors are limited time. What I was given as advice was: either pick a color that stays around so you can add as you would like over time (flame is the most common example, but talk to a store rep wherever you are looking at purchasing), purchase all you would like at once, or make sure you are okay with having all different colors. Whatever your preference is, I highly recommend talking to a knowledgeable store rep. Also certain pieces only come in a small selection of colors (if having one color is important to you).

@Celia I agree I have vacation rental properties and I have stocked them with Le Creuset and All-Clad. I am a cooking snob. I won't even get into the must have La Cornue stove that was a necessary item either to have lol.

Thanks everyone! We're going into contract on our first place this week and I'm going nuts over home stuff I want to buy vs. register for. I've been doing a lot of research but wanted to hear your opinions! I'm going to register for a Le Creuset.

It's just the two of us now but we'd like to expand in the future. Would you recommend a 5.5 or 7.25 qt? Round or oval? Is there even much of a difference?

I have both, and the le creuset just heats better and more consistently. I have the 7.25 qt le creuset round and a smaller lodge Dutch oven (probably 5.5 qt) round. I use them about equally depending on what I am cooking. I also have a 5 qt. oval enameled Dutch oven, but I can't remember the manufacturer. I like that as well, but we have run out of space, and it's buried in our cupboard. Laziness prevents me from using it unless I really need an oval one, which is not often.

Le Creuset is popular and trendy and therefore pricier. All iron cookware should last you a lifetime.

DH just bought a Lodge one last week. I think his big deciding factor was price. It's nice, works well, is enameled. We haven't had it long enough to comment on life span. I like the look of the Le Creuset ones and would definitely buy one if I found it on sale for a reasonable price.

Le Creuset. My mom is still using my great-grandmother's round Dutch oven.

@Kaye Le Creuset has been around for decades - not exactly a "trend". It is enameled cast iron, which requires less maintenance and last longer than traditional cast iron.

I have a 5-qt round Dutch oven, but I find it is too small for most soup recipes. I plan to register for the 7-qt.

I also have a grill pan which is AMAZING and cooks the best steak.
