NWR: Misuse of word "exponential".

MrsKruse, on March 3, 2017 at 12:27 PM

Okay grammar and vocab nerds, this isn't even kind of wedding-related but I don't feel like posting this question to Facebook or anywhere else. Has anyone noticed people misusing the word "exponential" a lot lately? I notice people using it when they really just mean "significant" or "a lot"....

I haven't heard that one yet luckily. My favorite on here is defiantly. "Defiantly choose the dress on the left." "You should defiantly pick the roses." I imagine the person doing those things defiantly every single time, and it makes me crack up.

Ugh, I hate when people use borrow instead of lend. It's very common here because we have so many official languages. But every time someone says "can you borrow me a pencil", I die a bit inside.

I haven't noticed that word being misused. When I see someone say defiantly instead of definitely I get irritated. A coworker just asked me to start a sentence in a mass email with the word And which drives me insane. My FH, I love him dearly, but in the 2.5 years we've been together I have not gotten him to say or type "in particular" correctly. He always says and types "impaticular" and I'm always telling him "that's not a word!"

All of you are so funny! I am no school teacher and certainly not perfect. However, I know basic grammar because I paid attention in school. What kills me is the incorrectly usage of "there/their/they're". I also hate text talk... when people use things like "u", "2", or 'l8r". We aren't in elementary school anymore. For the love of God, write like a literate adult.

Overuse of commas and apostrophes make me insane. I actually broke up with a guy over his ridiculous use of commas. I couldn't take it.

    @cindysue OMG YES

I hate when my kids (and people on the forum) use "apart" instead of "a part."

I can't wait to be apart of your special day!

So... you can't wait to be completely separate of it?

Someone posted the sweetest video on the Wedding Connection on facebook about grooms' faces when they see their brides waking down the aisle... and they spelled it "isle." *facepalm*

Can we also talk about the word "across?" Why do half the people I interact with say "acrosst?" What is that? Is that a real word?? Oh. And "to" vs. "too," and "your" vs. "you're." Gets me every time.

@ Lindsey That reminds me of "pist" instead of "pissed".

I got annoyed today when the training module I was doing said criteria when it should have used the singular criterion. So annoyed, how am I supposed to take this shit seriously?

The pretty paper and matching envelopes that you use for your wedding invitations is not "stationary". It's stationery.

Stationary means something completely different. I feel like almost no one knows that. I rarely see the correct spelling on WW.

@Elphaba I'm from Mississippi, so y'all is part of my everyday vocabulary; however, I rarely use it when I am typing anything. To me, it simply comes across as entirely too casual, but I completely agree about it needing to be written correctly if someone is going to use it.

The one I've been seeing for about a year now is the use of "apart" instead of "a part". "I really wanted her to be apart of my wedding". I don't know how that got started.

The FB wedding group I'm in (and say every day I'm going to leave) is terrible!! Always with the "walking down the isle," "we're having 100 guest," "my finance" (meaning fiancé lol), etc.

A girl on my Facebook always uses he's instead of his and it makes me want to stab my eyes out.

My MOH kept spelling bowls as "bowels" when she was writing out who bought what at the bridal shower for my thank you cards. It drove me crazy to look at it.

It also drives me crazy when people say "purpose" instead of propose, and "finance" instead of fiancé. It's the worst!
