NWR: Mother's day with your Ex?

FutureMrsForbes, on May 12, 2014 at 12:10 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 24

I have two daughters (10 and 7) from my previous marriage. And yesterday I spent the day with my kids of course. But then in the evening I was on facebook and saw a "friend" make a comment about how she was upset because the father of her child didn't wish her a happy mother's day?? I never expect anything from my Ex about or for mother's day, other than if it's his weekend, that he lets me have my girls for the day.

Am I in the majority on this or is my friend? And vice versa do you go out of your way to say Happy Father's day to your ex?

Well, of course it always depends on the relationship the two people have, but generally, I wouldn't expect anything from an ex Smiley sad Maybe she is still a little hung up on him??

My ex husband wished me Happy Mother's day yesterday and we only had two dogs with each other. Haha.

I don't think it is a big deal. Personally, it depends on the relationship you have with your ex but IMO he doesn't need to congratulate.

I got something from my son that I know was given to him by his stepmom and while I appreciated it, I certainly didn't expect it. (For the record she gave him two necklaces that she sells to give me and I later got a text saying if anyone asked about them to give her phone number).

I had lunch with my daughter and her father on Saturday and he wished me a Happy Mother's Day. We have always agreed no matter what, we are still her mom and dad.

That is kinda what I thought? I was very surprised that she was hurt and upset enough to rant about it on Facebook. I mean she is kinda know for drama, but still!

My ex gave me a card that was signed from my son with 2 movie tickets. I tore up the card and gave the movie tickets to a friend. I don't need him to wish me a happy mothers day. I told him that I would rather him not do anything for me. He said it was from our son... I am like really our 3 year old has a job? When you move on you move on... that is just my opinion though. I would be upset if my husband gave his ex wife a mothers day gift. Really??? Why?

My mom was a single parent and my grandparents would buy her a mother's day gift from me when I was to young to buy a gift for her....guess it really wasn't from me either....wow

As for the OPs friend, sounds like someone is just trying to start drama like people often do on facebook.

While my ex didn't wish me a happy mother's day, his girlfriend purchased a beautiful arrangement of flowers and a card "from" my boys. My ex and I get along though and I think his new girlfriend is a good fit for him and she is so good to my boys!! Yes I will wish him a happy father's day because it's what friends say to each other (even though he didn't wish me a happy mother's day...rise above...LOL) and you bet your sweet bippy, I'm going to find out what his GF's birthday is so that I can get her a GC for a mani and pedi "from" my boys as well.

I like being kind to people and it's so enjoyable when it's returned to me...especially when the norm in an ex/divorce/breakup situation is to be nasty to each other.

My XH didn't even wish me Happy Mothers day the 11 years I was a mother and married to him. I sure don't expect it nor want it now. I won't be wishing him Happy Fathers day either because he's a poor excuse for a father.

My DH is more of a dad/father to my children then their dad will EVER be.

My mom, has always given the kids a little something to give to me for mothers day. This year included even though DH gave me a few things for our flower beds, flowers and took me out to eat. He tops all I've ever dreamed of!

My ex did wish me a happy mother's day and my kids gave me a bouquet of flowers and a card he purchased. Last week was his week so I had the "pleasure" of seeing him yesterday when I picked my kids up since it IS my holiday :-)

If he would have ignored me (and he has in years past), that would have been okay too. However, that's harder to do now because Mother's Day was a big deal to my daughters. It was a big deal that they had flowers to give me.

As for Father's Day - I follow his lead. Whatever he does (or doesn't do) for Mother's Day is how I respond on Father's Day. I have a couple token ideas that I hope my kids will buy into for Father's Day.

ETA: My kids thought DH should give me something for Mother's Day, but I explained that I'm not his mother and that their dad took them shopping for me. That seemed to satisfy them.

I do the same thing @Paris. It's always his lead, I don't want a happy mother's day from him. I'm not his mother. And he did take my girls so that they could spend their allowance money on a card and single rose from each of them. And I LOVE that they bought it for me, it's so sweet!! But every other year I was happy with the handmade gifts that came home from school for me! I don't need him to take them shopping.

I don't have kids but even though you aren't together you're still the mother of his children. I think I would want the father of my kids to appreciate that.

My parent's divorced when I was 12. My mother would take me to the store. While she was looking at something else. I would pick her something out, use her debit card to pay for it, and go out to the car to hide it, so she wouldn't see it. One year, money was tight and my grandparents bought her an extra gift. She wanted a digital picture frame. They got her that and let me wrap it. They said it was from me.

I always hated that I didn't have money to get her anything. So when I was 17 with my first job, I spent over $800 dollars on her Christmas. It was the first year since my parents got a divorce that she had big Christmas.

My son lives with me full time. I still make sure "he" buys his (now ex) step mum a card and a coffee card. I make sure "he" buys his dad a fathers gift, birthday gift etc. whatever my relationship is with my ex is my issue, our son shouldn't be dragged in.

Do I want a material gift from my son, no, I love the items he makes in class and brings home.

I also make sure cards are sent to my ex's parents for birthday etc.

Being a guy, and being gay, I can't say much about the situation. But, unless I hated the crap out of my ex, I would think, while dropping the kids off, or picking them up, I would be nice enough to say "happy mothers day" after all, she is the mother of the kids. That being said, people who rant on FB about other people are so passive aggressive anyways... I could see why they may be exes in the first place.

My ex sent me a nice Mother's Day message and I went out to eat with my boys - of course, I paid. They're 21 & 18 with no jobs, so I know they can't really take me out. Ha! I would have no problems wishing my ex a Happy Father's Day, either. We will always be their mom and dad even if we are no longer husband and wife.

I could careless if my ex wished me a Happy Mother's Day. I do know my husband ex be acting like that. She still loves and want to be with him even after all these years. Our kids are grown so they can do it all themselves. I dont deal with my ex at all and dont want to. I dont put my kids in the middle either. Maybe one day she wont even get to that point to care at all.

My ex got me a Mothers Day card. But it wouldn't of bothered me if he hadn't.

I would probably die from shock if my ex wished me a Happy Mother's Day.

He's too stuck up his own ass to worry about our son, much less anything else!
