NWR: Pregnancy after birth control..

LuvBeingMarried2Him!, on January 13, 2017 at 10:03 PM Posted in Married Life 0 33

I've been on birth control for 18 years and now that we are thinking of starting a family, I am wondering how long it has taken you ladies to get pregnant after the pill. I know everyone is different.. I'm just wondering if it can happen quickly? I haven't decided to get off just yet.

Also.. if anyone has any tips for TTC.. please share.

Thanks so much ladies!

I know someone who was 37, had been on for 20 years, went off 3 months before the wedding, and was 3 months pregnant at her wedding.

Confirm with your Dr, but I believe that you can TTC immediately after stopping the pill.

I was only 24, but I got pregnant the first month I stopped... never got my first non-birth control period. I had been on it for 6 years prior.

I'm not TTC, but I asked my OBGYN this same question. She said it can happen very quickly and to be ready to get pregnant when you go off the pill.

You can get pregnant immediately! You're at risk of getting pregnant just after accidentally missing one or two pills, after all...

@stephanie said it perfectly! I missed a pill or two and got pregnant a week after getting engaged! It ended in a miscarriage so now we're being SUPER careful from now til the wedding. It can definitely happen quickly

You get can pregnant right away. I have heard of some women it taking a little bit, handful of months, just depends on your body I guess.

I've been on it for 16 years and my OBGYN said to give it 4-6 months for my body to get back to normal. My friend was on it for over ten years, forgot her pills on a week long vacation, and got pregnant during that time. Everyone is different but my doctor made it sound like it does take awhile to regulate once you go off birth control.

Took me 6 months but don't go in expecting it to happen quickly. If you know you're ready to start TTC, have a sit down with your OB so they can make sure everything is okay and they can tell you what you can do to stay as healthy as possible while you try.

Just to give the other side -- I have friends who were on for around 15 years (+/-) and who took up to 2 years to conceive. Two women I know had to start taking meds to help them ovulate more often/regularly... to me it's a hope for the best, expect the "worst" kind of situation... everyone is different!

Unless you were using the depo shot, your chances of conceiving shouldn't be affected by your prior birth control use.

No one is ever realy ready. It can happen right away, though some forms, esp depo shot can delay the return to full fertility. Though it can happen right away do not go in with that expectation or become disappointed if it takes awhile.

The only time I was off birth control I had my non-hormonal iud removed and within 6 weeks I was pregnant (with twins!), but I have had friends with very different situations and who have had difficulty ttc. Be healthy, exercise, manage your stress, and have fun.

Everyone's body reacts differently. It's absolutely not uncommon to go off the pill and then not get a period for 45 days; or to have two within a 30 day period. If your periods slowed or completely stopped while on the pill it means you thinned your uterine lining out and it may take a few cycles to get back to normal. If you had normal periods while on the pill, you'll snap back to normal (although I gotta tell you, my first period off the pill was so heavy and so crampy I thought I was going to spend a week in bed crying. That was the only one like that, but if you do have a bad one, don't freak out!). Oh and another weird thing---you really don't realize how much sensation the pill deadens until you stop taking it. Hello weird skin once a month, hello cramps, hello sex drive.

If you don't get back to a normal cycle after a few months, see a doctor.

I stopped taking the pill a year ago, but we used backup methods until May. I got pregnant the first time we had sex without protection (but I miscarried at two months). You can absolutely get pregnant immediately, but typically it takes up to 6 months to get pregnant. Even if you do everything right and you're both healthy, you still only have a 10-20% chance (depending on your age) of getting pregnant each month so don't get sad if it doesn't happen right away.

If your periods are irregular, you have painful periods, or if you get past 6 months of trying with nothing, you can go see a doctor. It's a myth you have to try a year before seeing a doctor, but it's expensive so don't rush it that's for sure.

Signed, someone still trying to get pregnant (again).
