NWR: Sad to get rid of first car

tucker052315, on January 23, 2015 at 10:49 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 4

Back in Nov I bought new tires for my 20 yr old car thinking it would last me a couple more years. Then in Jan my grandpa decided to sell his car and it was a good deal I couldn't really pass up. He is financing it and payments are flexible. I had decided to keep both cars and drive my old one to the farm. Now my alternator has gone out on the old car so my fiance is pushing me to just get rid of it. Its nothing special just a old Saturn but I've been driving it for 10 years. Am I weird for being so attached to this car?

We had an old Saturn too...not quite as old but maybe 10 or 12 years. That thing was amazing. It got 40 MPG even though it was from the 90s. I don't think it is weird to be sad, I'm sure you had lots of good memories in that car!

I drove my 1998 Honda Accord for 7 years. Her name was Henrietta and she was so good to me-- until the gear shift came out in my hand as I was parking. That kinda did it for me. I traded her in when I leased my new Escape (they gave me $800 for her! Woo!). Sometimes I miss that old girl, but a few weeks ago when the windchill was -25 and my car actually started without having to jump it, I was glad I got a new one.

So I don't think you're weird for being attached to a car. We spend so much time in our cars, of course we get attached to them!

I bought my first car in 1999. I had her 3 months shy of our 10 year. It was a turbo charged eclipse with the high wing. Nobody could catch me at a light...I loved that car but with going to be an aunt a 2nd time and the possibility of my grandma moving to the US, a 4 door sedan was needed and the 0% financing didn't hurt to help seal the deal. Plus that car needed premium gas and with my lead foot, I would put gas 2 times a week.

Though my 4 car sedan is a 2.4 liter sports version, it doesn't have that hum of the turbo engine...It was hard to give that car up. I had even put new gun metal rims...soo sharp.

I drove my old Saturn for 9 years and my mom gave me her old car for free. I passed my Saturn down to my dad so he had a family car to drive my niece around in. I dont know if I could have standing selling it to a stranger.
