NWR: Shingles

Seale, on July 3, 2017 at 4:03 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 45

Has anyone else had shingles in their mid twenties? Thursday l noticed what looked to be a bite on the right side of my stomach. Didn't think anything of it since it's not uncommon for me to have random mosquito bites. Noticed it was really red and sensitive to the touch Friday. Put some cortisone on it and went about my business until I noticed two different spots popped up in a diagonal line. The spots were becoming bumpier and the initial spot redder and more sensitive. The next day I mention something to FH (he's a RN) about how sensitive the skin around this bug bite is, the rash, and that it's starting to get painful. He looks at and says it looks like the start of shingles which the doctor confirmed this morning. Now I get to take these gigantic blue pills for the next ten days. My FSIL had shingles a few months ago at 16 and my SIL had it last year at 27.

No advice, sorry. Although I've heard about people getting shingles more and more often lately. Hope you feel better soon!

I hadn't heard about it until my SIL got it and apparently she knows three or four people who have gotten it as a young adult.

H had it in his mid twenties. He caught it early so his recovery was fairly quick.

Thanks for the well wishes! The doctor said since it was caught in the first week that I should recover quickly and without much fuss. I was just curious how many others out there has gotten it at a young age.

Just curious, have you had the chicken pox vaccine? Or did you have chicken pox as a child?

I had chicken pox twice as a child but both times were very, very mild cases.

I had the shingles a couple years ago and it was very unpleasant. Took over the whole top right of my back and shoulder. Felt like my skin was being shred to pieces. Mine did not completely clear up until like a week and a half after my last dose of meds. I know exactly what you're going through and I hope it heals up fast!

I've never heard of it in someone so young, but I have heard it's commonly brought on by heavy stress, which clearly having shingles helps SO much...hope you're feeling better really soon!

My BIL just had shingles pretty bad. He's 22 and it was on his face up into his hair and it was in his mouth/on his tongue.

The outbreak is on my stomach so I thankfully noticed fairly quickly. If it had been on my back, it probably would have been a few more days before I gave in to the pain and checked out what was going on and then it would have been a few more days of me waiting to see if it would go away on its own. The prescribed me an antiviral but no pain meds. Maybe because it was caught so early? I read the risk factors but I didn't present with them, including heavy stress. The only thing I can think of is that FH was really sick last week with a 104* temp and in trying to fight away in germs I may have gotten from him, it allowed the shingles to develop? Probably not but it's my leading theory right now.

Yup, and I've had it 3 more times since then. Luckily, I have learned to recognize the changes in my vision and soreness in my back that let's me know it's coming.

I hope you feel better soon---the good news is that the terrible bumps go away completely, even though it looks like something that would leave linger term discoloration.

Ugh! I had shingles this past December (I was 24) and my husband currently has shingles (26). My best friend also had a bout of it not that long ago (age 24). It's so painful. Best advice: take the meds as prescribed and RELAX. It's unclear if younger people are getting it because of stress levels or if there is some mutation/change in genetics. Either way, follow through with all orders or it could get worse. Luckily by the sounds of it you took action quickly. Hang in there!

Also, if you had chicken pox the shingles virus lays dormant inside your body. Any kind of trauma to that area (i.e., hitting your stomach, falling, etc) could also have triggered it.

I had shingles when I was 22- it sucks. It was on my hip right wear my pants would hit. Take the mess. Keep it covered and rest! You'll be okay once it passes.

I will definitely take the medicine. It's a 3x a day for 10 days antiviral. I'm pretty good with pain but if I can avoid it, I will.

I read where they think it has something to do with immunity to it. For instance, in cases where a child had a very mild case of child pox (like me) won't have built up a proper immunity to it so the shingles virus can activate early. Though, they are still trying to pinpoint exactly what is causing younger adults to get it from what I read.
