Has anyone else had shingles in their mid twenties? Thursday l noticed what looked to be a bite on the right side of my stomach. Didn't think anything of it since it's not uncommon for me to have random mosquito bites. Noticed it was really red and sensitive to the touch Friday. Put some cortisone on it and went about my business until I noticed two different spots popped up in a diagonal line. The spots were becoming bumpier and the initial spot redder and more sensitive. The next day I mention something to FH (he's a RN) about how sensitive the skin around this bug bite is, the rash, and that it's starting to get painful. He looks at and says it looks like the start of shingles which the doctor confirmed this morning. Now I get to take these gigantic blue pills for the next ten days. My FSIL had shingles a few months ago at 16 and my SIL had it last year at 27.

Yup, I'm in my late 20s. They should give you some Lyrica for the nerve pain...but don't try to function on that stuff lol.

Also, you can't catch it from your FH having a fever. It's just a reawakening of a dormant herpes simplex virus.

He didn't give me anything for pain. Just the antiviral. If it hurts too bad before I finish with the medicine, I'll go back and request something.

I got shingles for the first time when I was around 21 yrs old and it has been recurring since then (I'm 28 now) I get shingles whenever I'm highly stressed. I can feel the shingles are coming before the bumps/rash break out. My advice is to take your meds as prescribed and do not scratch them!

I've had the shingles vaccine, and am keeping my fingers crossed that it works. But they don't usually give it until you are 50. And I've been hearing of more young people (including my nephew) getting it recently.

Then I have no clue how/why I got it. Haha! Definitely didn't fall into one of the risk categories so I guess it was just one of the weird occurrence or it's something that I wasn't even aware of. I've actually been doing good about not scratching them but they haven't really started itching until today. Mostly they've just been slightly uncomfortable.

@Sara He didn't even suggest a pain med. Maybe because it's so early in the game he didn't think I would need them? Also, I didn't mention being in a lot of pain. Just said that it was starting to hurt.

@2d Bride He mentioned the vaccine but it was a no-go when he mentioned how much it costs and then informed me that it doesn't always prevent the shingles. He has had patients pay for the vaccine and then turn around and get shingles. Apparently there's a new one coming out that's supposed to be better, though-- according to him.

I got the shingles vaccine a year ago and still got shingles shortly after. Since high stress triggers mine, I now just try to control my stress by working out more frequently, not over working myself at work etc

Not fun, good luck. I haven't had it but found it on my mom's scalp while cutting her hair and I felt terrible watching her suffer through them.

I had it when I was 17. Anyone who has ever had chicken pox cab get it. Its usually brought out by a compromised immune system/stress. I had both when I got it. I wound up in the hospital eith mine but i was on other meds that were contraindicated with the shingles meds so i had to go off all my UC meds, in order to take the shingles meds which in turn caused me to go into a UC flare. So my case was a little extreme lol. Just follow doctors orders and rest up! Its pretty painful but once the meds start kicking in you should be fine. Rest up and feel better soon!!!!

I always thought shingles happen to elderly folks; but since learned that it can happen to anyone that had chicken pox...20's or late 30's in my case. I was camping, thought I had spider bites on my side from sleeping in an old CCC cabin. I knew I had a Drs appointment coming up & just figured I'd get it checked out the following week. VERY painful few weeks : (

I asked the Dr to look at my 'spider bites' while I was there...'Um, you have shingles'....What?!? Was given Rx & sent on my way. I did ask the Dr if shingles is like chickenpox...where once you get it, you tend not to get it again. The Dr couldn't confirm if that is true or not...I certainly hope it is!

I had it last year, did the same thing you did. You'll start feeling better in about 3 days. It was caused by heavy stress, hope you feel better soon!

@ambrok I read that, too but that is referring to people that are older. There was another article that says the chance of reoccurrence in a young adult who have gotten it is greater than the chance of overall occurrence.

I'm thankful it wasn't on my face. It's spread since yesterday. It starts on my stomach, wraps around my side, and I can feel a spot right next to my spine. Just took my second dose of the medicine.

I had it 2ish years ago (so, early 30s) on my stomach/back right where my bra band goes. I remember it being really painful for a few weeks...

Then not very long after I got this weird viral rash all over my body that lasted like 6 weeks. It was a great year for me.
