NWR: Swollen spider bite...

Liz, on September 13, 2012 at 8:40 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 16

I got bit by...something. And it's been swollen for over a day. I've iced, used benedril, advil, haven't been itching and it's still tender and swollen. No fevers no flu symptoms and my arm hasn't fallen off if it was a brown recluse...should I wait it out or should I go into the health clinic? Opinions, professional or not welcomed.

I had a spider bite while picking weeds a few years ago. It started out as a small bump and grew to a grape, and larger. It finally had to be lanced. Not sure what type of spider it was bc I didn't see it. But I still have a scar on my arm.

I'd give it time, if it continues to grow, go to the doctor right away!

Keep an eye on it a little longer...brown recluse bites take a little while to start doing real damage - it will look like a pimple with a whitish head, then a popped pimple with a sort of crater, and just keep getting worse. Many spider bites will stay a little swollen for a while, but if anything changes, or you start seeing red streaks, or the swelling or pain worsens, go to the dr.

Luckily, none of that is happening, it just my forearm where the bite is is swollen and red. But I'll take a tylinol and try not to panic.

I guess the first thing you should do is look at the center of the bite to see if there are 2 puncture marks or just 1. I could just be a large mosquito bite. Last week I got 1 on my arm that made half my forearm swell so it does happen.

I would go into the doctor. They can get really out of hand quick, and in the best case scenario, the doctor will give you something to take the allergic reaction away.

Map it, draw a pen line around it today, tomorrow if it has gotten out of that line go to the doctors.

My daughter got bitten by a spider and it swelled to the size of a golf ball within 3 hours. The doctor put her on anitbiotics and I'm glad I took her immediately. It improved significantly by the next day

I'd probably call your doctor ... it could turn into cellulitis ... which is a pain

I would err on the side of caution and go to the health center and have it checked out, especially since its still tender and swollen. They can turn bad quickly and as pp jennifer confirmed, they can leave a scar. Worse case scenario if you go to the dr they say everything is fine

I'D go get it checked to be safe! CRAZY you postedthis because last night we were painting at our new house & i had seen 2 spider the night prior in our basement, so sure enought theyre there last night i took a pic of the one & then he started coming at me so i sprayed him with lysol & he died...but i think they are wolf spiders, whose bites are no joke either, so im having an exterminator come out to take a look & maybe have the house bombed....you could look int othat also if you thihnk its a problem. These guys were big so im not trying to play games with them LOL

I wouldn't wait, I would go to a walk-in or even the hospital. My mom got bit by a spider 3 years ago (not sure which one) and it started off as her knee sore then got red/had a bump & then it just got so swollen she couldn't even walk. We took her to the hospital & it was filled with fluid.. She had to get hooked up to IV & then had to have a home nurse come a few times to drain it.

I wouldn't take this lightly, don't wait! But if you do want to don't wait more then a day or two, if it gets bigger go! Cause these bites can get ugly.

I have been bitten by 2 spiders in the past month! Definetely not fun, but as long as the swelling doesn't keep up or the redness spreading like MJ said. They do suck to deal with, but don't panic about it! If it seems to spread I would go see a Doctor just to be safe.

That's good that it was a mosquito bite. I hate bugs!! I just got stung by a scorpion in my bed Friday night :'( It was not fun at all! My back felt like it was on fire for 8 hours! And FH got stung too, his leg was numb for 4 days. It stung him first then me. Who does that scorpion think he is just being under my covers?! We had an exterminator come yesterday and hopefully we won't see anymore, but they are hard to get rid of. That's one of the down sides of living in the desert. Anywho...I just wanted to say YAY that it was only a mosquito!!
