Oasis for centerpieces

rachel, on January 22, 2013 at 10:41 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 11

I am thinking of using oasis for my centerpieces with hydrangea and roses. I have heard mixed reviews of using it with hydrangea. Some say they use too much water for oasis. We also want to make the centerpieces Thursday for a Saturday wedding. Any thoughts??

I think that using hydrangea would be fine. I like something like this. It looks opulent without a whole lot of flowers. You could get a glass or metal bottom to avoid cost for silver or buy a ceramic planter and spray paint silver or gold.

You didn't mention the type of container you will be using to hold the oasis. It's true that hydrangea require a lot of water and the use of oasis has been known to hinder the uptake of water to a hydrangea. If possible, you might be able to "pre-drill" a hole in the oasis prior to poking the hydrangea.

Use a pencil, straw, etc and poke your hole where you want the bloom to go. Be sure the stem of the hydrangea goes all the way to the bottom of the container. Also make sure the containers are FULL of water. Do not rely on the oasis to be the only water source in the container.

The fortunate thing about hydrangeas is this: If you make the centerpieces on Thursday, you will know within a day if your hydrangea are getting enough water because they will wilt if they aren't. If discovered in enough time, you can simply soak your hydrangea in a bucket of water and it will rehydrate the stems enough to perk back up.

    Problem solved. =)

I just made a mock centerpiece using hydrangeas with the oasis foam. So I can let you know how they hold up!

    Centerpiece looks awesome, Rossy!!!!

Rachel, you might try contacting a few local florists to see if they offer DIY pricing for bulk flowers. A lot of florists are hopping on this bandwagon.

Hi Rachel- So I made the centerpieces Sunday afternoon. Monday afternoon they looked great...but by Tuesday one of the hydrangeas was wilting a little. I I added water to the oasis foam several times during the time between Sun-Tues.

Hope this helps! Have you tried your mock up yet?
