Officiating for my parents. Tips?

Katie, on July 27, 2018 at 12:17 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 9

My stepdad and mom have been together for 16 years and have finally decided to get married. They are having a very small (10 people max) wedding in a local cafe next month. The cafe is decorated very forest themed and is beautiful! My mom asked if I would like to officiate as they are keeping costs down and do not want a total stranger marrying them. She asked me because I'm her daughter, I know their relationship well, and I'm the most charismatic person she knows (I've done a lot of theater productions over the past 10 years). This is my first time doing anything like this. Does anyone have any tips or advice? I will be getting ordained online and I've already checked out the legal aspects of what I will need to do on my end. I'm having trouble coming up with a good script that is simple yet beautiful. They are not religious.

So no "Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate...."? I'm kidding....unless it was Prince's version Smiley winking

My best friends husband is marrying us. He is very witty/charming and used to speaking in front of people, but this is his first wedding. So we are all on the hunt for an informal ceremony for him to semi-follow. Haven't had any luck yet. I am hoping after an evening together and enough wine, we will be able to hammer something coherent out!

Totally understand! Everything I find online just seems so stuffy and formal!

I can't help much with a script but I was at a wedding once for a couple that had been together for ages. The officiant asked if anyone had any stories or words of wisdom to share. It was such a personal and beautiful moment. Given that the ceremony is so small maybe this would be a good idea for them, too. It could give you some inspiration for your script and allow you to do something shorter if you're stuck. Good luck!

That's very exciting to be able to officiate the wedding for them! What a special honor!

I don't have any specific examples to cite, but there are a looooot of examples of ceremony scripts all over the internet. There are ones for religious and non-religious ceremonies as well as scripts for other things (hand binding, unity ceremonies, ring warming, etc). I'd get an idea of what they want to include in the ceremony and start looking around from there. You can copy and paste and adjust where you need to.

If you're not used to public speaking too, make sure that you speak loudly and clearly, especially if you won't have a microphone.
