One Cake, Two Cakes?

Imani, on May 1, 2022 at 9:52 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 58
I wasn’t aware that some traditional weddings have a two cakes. One for everyone to eat and one for the spouse. Is it required to have an additional cake? Are you having two cakes? What’s your second cake idea choice? My mom attended a wedding today and their cake was a guitar because that’s his instrument he plays. I’m curious if we should have an additional cake or not. Our venue is providing our main cake. One Cake, Two Cakes? 1

Do 2 cakes if you want 2... but I'm not sure why you think it's a requirement.

Who said it was ? Your state government? Your officiant? Your local county clerk? LOL.

In order to provide our folks alternative options: We are doing a "pretty small,2-tier" cake with 2 flavors for us and half of the guest list (it's more or less similar to doing 2 small cakes but it's still one 😜) + 2 additional desserts, 1 of which will be sugar-free, for the other half because I've read somewhere that typically, half of the cake is not eaten since some guests don't like cakes and others skip sweets altogether.

It isn't very common where I live, but it clearly is a cultural thing - the one that springs to mind is the groom's red velvet armadillo cake in Steel Magnolias, lol!

We only had one cake, and still ended up with waaaaaay too much left over, even though we didn't even order a cake big enough for all of our guests to have a slice.

We suspected they wouldn't, since our venue served desserts in addition to the cake, so we ordered a cake with enough coffee slices for 80 people, with a max guest list of about 110 or so, and a final head count of 92.

I'd say we had at least two thirds of the cake left in the end, so if budget is an issue or you're wavering on this, I'd definitely feel free to skip it.

Lol - maybe not required. I sorta kinda want to do a traditional 3 tier cake but I also was thinking about cupcakes, mainly because of the excess leftover cake. I didn’t even eat cake at the last two weddings attended. I like the one cake with two flavors option though.

Never knew the armadillo cake was even a thing! Interesting. Apparently there’s also a thing where the couple saves the second cake and eat it on their anniversary! Heard about it today and was shocked. I think we might skip the second cake, especially if the venue is already providing one.

Yes, I'd also heard about saving the cake! To be honest I didn't think ours tasted that great the following day, so the idea of freezing it and keeping it for a whole year is kind of gross to me, haha!

I suppose it made more sense back in the day when people had very dense fruit cakes that were soaked in alcohol and so they were expected to keep better - our cake was a banana cake, so note quite the same!

And i think the armadillo thing was just that groom's preference - his aunt made those cakes, and he chose an armadillo - she said in the movie she can make any type except snakes, because she 'doesn't have the counterspace' LOL

Cake + cupcakes and cupcakes only were huge trends in the 2000's , I attented many early 2000's weddings as a kid and they were everywhere LOL... It seems like they're making a huge comeback.

Lol interesting! The armadillo turned out really nice! I agree, keeping a cake for a year is kind of gross. I was like ‘do people really do this’ - but in this day and age maybe not.

I think cupcakes would be easier to just grab and go. I honestly don’t think I will have any cake. Maybe the next day if there is any left over. We could even have a cake stand with the cupcakes with our initials on the cupcakes. Hmm.. that might not be a bad idea. (I say this now, but still might end up with a 3 tier cake 😅)

Hey Monique! It’s so funny you say that because Britany also like carrot cake! I think it’s nasty 😆 I could get her own personal carrot cake, but not at the wedding. I think that would be a good idea, y’all birthday/wedding cake and blowing out the candles together. That would be cute.

We ordered our cake from a baker but for the cookies and brownies we are planning to go to BJ’s and buy some platters and then get something to put them on ! Cheaper then buying it all from the baker and BJ’s cookies and mini brownies are SO good lol.. I’ll probably look for something similar to this to put the cookies on!! One Cake, Two Cakes? 2

Not a requirement, but it’s a cool thing that the groom can use to express himself! Hence the name “groom’s cake”. For anyone that does this “bride’s cake” and “groom’s cake” (like us) you don’t have make the bride’s cake feed every guest - that would make having the groom’s cake more expensive! Instead you can split the guest count among the cakes, which is what we are doing. Since my FH loves craft beer (and I do too lol) his groom’s cake will be sculpted to look like our favorite brewery, St. Arnold’s!

Also just to note - that tradition of saving and freezing cake from your wedding to eat on the first anniversary is usually only that small top tier of the bride’s cake, so if you want to partake in that tradition, don’t worry about having to save an entire cake for that hahaha! It should just be a small portion that fits in your freezer - so the tiny tier or a few pieces.

We did a four tier cake with 4 varying flavors. I included a flavor that he loved on the very top tier.

Ahh - that makes more sense! I was thinking how would this entire cake fit in the freezer lol It’s so funny you say St. Arnold’s because my coworker and her husband LOVE that place!!! I’m assuming you have been to their new location as well. I like this idea!
