One sided reception

So, it’s going to be a very small guest list anyways. A courthouse ceremony and restaurant reception after. Out of 19 guests I only have 3. My mom, stepdad and sister. He has his entire family and their significant others/ kids, plus family friend and his wife, and his boss coming. We initially agreed on having only family. But of course people on his side told him to invite those three other people. I know it shouldn’t be a big deal.. but I’m so bothered by it. I don’t even know why. Is it really that big of a deal?

Generally the guest list should be fair, balanced and reasonable. It is mostly okay if he is inviting family on his side that would be open to the same conditions for your family. If inviting a family friend, that should be okay for invitees. It would make sense if some additional people for your side were invited simply as a consequence of such imbalance. Inviting the boss might be good tactically for work advancement.

On the other hand, the guest list could be reasonable if that just represents the difference between family sizes. You may then be joining into a bigger family that could work out well. Thus the guest list could be a blessing.

Other posters should add some good details here.
