Open bar, cash bar, limited bar?

Munkos, on June 13, 2014 at 9:27 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 58

I know this is a sticky subject since it's considered bad etiquette to do a cash bar or drink tickets - but what is everyone planning on doing to cut the costs and what kind of bar are you having?

We're doing an open bar. Our venue has a great price of $18 for 4 hours. I was blown away and had to ask if that was correct about twice because of how inexpensive that is.

ETA: $18 a person, of course.

I did open bar. I sacrificed many things to be able to have one. A limited bar, I'm completely fine with, I love wine and beer. Cash bar is better than dry wedding, but I'm not going to be very happy with it.

We on a reserved deck of a public dining cruise. It is a 3 hour cruise and we will have our own bartender for a open bar for 2 hours. And no, to answer my BIL's question, you cannot order six drinks at a time. LOL

We are still deciding if we are doing open bar or host bar. FH says we should just do cash bar, if any alcohol at all. When he said that, I looked at him like he had 3 heads. His reasoning was that his family doesn't drink at all, so we don't need alcohol. I said um hello, my family does, plus I want to be able to enjoy a beverage or three....we are definitely having alcohol. We will probably go with host bar, where we just pay at the end of the night for however many drinks are sold. I think that will come out to be cheaper than open bar, because I don't want to pay per person for open bar when nobody in his family drinks.

We're hosting wine and beer up to $3,500, then after that it'll turn into a cash bar. Anyone having mixed drinks will have to pay. We know cash bars are tacky, but FH's sister did the same thing at her wedding (except she hosted up to $6k) and it was perfectly fine and everyone had a good time.

Open bar. It was non-negotiable, but we come from families of drinkers and our friends are all big partyers

Edited for cost: Per person came out to $18/person, but we added the premium bar for an extra $3/head, it will be well worth it in our case

We're doing beer and wine. We're supplying our own. We have 15 cases of beer and 6 cases of wine (the huge bottles). Cost us about 700 bucks and we have 85 guests.

We had a full open bar, but saved money by doing rail liquor and house wine. Our venue (a pub) is known for having a great beer list, and anything on tap was included in our package, so most people drank beer anyway.

My preference, of course, is a full open bar. But I wouldn't think twice about beer, wine and a signature cocktail only. I've only been to one cash bar wedding, which I found weird and slightly tacky. Pretty much everyone left early and no one was really dancing.

For us, three different kinds of canned beer, three kinds of wine, and 16 top shelf liquors with 2 bartenders for 6 hours for 150 people was only around $2200.

Also, they supply the ice, soft drinks. coffee, tea, garnishes, mixers, cups, etc. It was a no brainer to go with an open bar at that price and it is hassle free for us. We don't have to supply anything.

We are having hosted/open bar, but I just recently learned that none of FH's friends or family do that and he said he has never been to an open bar wedding. I was so surprised! I have been to beer and wine only hosted events, but mostly all open bar. We went to a friend's wedding recently and luckily one of the GM told us that it was cash bar...as in literally only cash...so we had time to stop at the ATM! 1/2 of the guests at my wedding don't drink at all or might have one...the other 1/2 are big drinkers, so we hope paying "on consumption" we will come out ahead of the flat fee the venue charges (about $44pp!)...here's hoping!

We're doing a limited bar (beer and wine) for now. We MIGHT open a tab for liquor up to a certain amount or have a "signature drink"

We're doing a consumption bar, which is similar to an open bar but we pay only for what people drink instead of $40 per person. I REALLY doubt anyone would drink $40 of alcohol in one night.

    We had open bar.

I don't mind limited bar, especially if it has a good and creative signature drink with it. Cash bar, not a fan, but I like to have a heads up if there will be one, so I know to bring cash.

We did beer and wine. We had a lunch time wedding for 110 people at a reception hall so we were able to bring our own. We had 18 bottles of wine and a variety of beer - around $600 for everything. Came home with leftovers: 4 bottles of wine, a case of COORS light, and a 12-pack of Sierra Nevada.

Full open bar and its $28 per person. We are having three bars throughout the night. Two are for beer, wine, and mixed drinks. The other bar is specifically for mojitos!

We paid for a limited (champagne, bloody mary's, mimosas, soft drinks, in addition to unlimited juice, tea and coffee included in our brunch menu) bar on a consumption basis. As we had a Sunday brunch wedding, people drank WAY less than I was expecting them to. Saved me quite a bit of money, woo!
