Open bar details...last hour?

We have our reception venue for a total of 5 hours (5-10pm) with 5-6 being cocktail hour. We have our reception venue for a total of 5 hours (5-10pm) with 5-6 being cocktail hour. At our tasting last month, our coordinator said last call would be at 9, saying people who still want to drink can get however many drinks they want at 9 to last them until 10. FH didn't say much then. Today, she sent a detailed order (with a few errors otherwise) saying open bar of the super premium stuff from 5-9, with the bar staying open for me and FH but cash bar for guests for that last hour. I didn't like the sound of that. Called back, asked if we could make last call at 9:30. I said I'd rather there be an open bar or no bar the last hour. I don't want guests paying for anything. And again...if you're not done drinking at 9, you could go up, get 2-3 drinks if you wanted and drink until 10 when we leave. Totally your choice. Now FH is bent out of shape saying we shouldn't have to pay the extra money (bar package is set for 4 hours) so extra time is extra $. Being from Philly, he says ..

I agree brielz....it's easier just to say "Last Call". A lot harder to detail anything beyond that.

NOPE. No cash bar, ever. If the reception ends at 10, last call should be about 9:30. End of discussion.

I know this happens at most of the weddings I attend in NWPA but they close the bar during dinner so that the open bar stays open until the end of the reception (we are also only allowed to have a 4 hour bar service

@Stephannie, I will definitely look into this. I DO remember the coordinator mentioning a closed bar during dinner...which didn't make sense to me at the time so I requested that not happen (not realizing the 4-hour deal), but I will see if we can have a "closed" bar from 6-6:30 since people will largely be on the move and getting settled in to their table while the intros and dances happen. If there's a small sign at the bar saying "will re-open at 6:30", I think that can at least communicate to the handful of people who may walk up during the very beginning of dinner.

I will definitely look into this. I'd prefer my parents to not have to pay another $**** for an extra hour (I want to say it's a pp count for an extra hour).

Cash bars, mismatched bridesmaids' dresses and naked cakes should be declared Class A Felonies. NO CASH BAR, TACKY!

I had a 4 hour open bar package, and a 5 hour reception.

I switched to a consumption bar at the end of the open bar. We paid the tab and it was way cheaper than paying for an extra hour of open bar. Most people were pretty tipsy by then. Last call was 20 minutes before the end of the reception.

If I were you I'd shut the bar down at 9pm then.

We had cocktail hour from 6-7 and then closed bar during dinner 7-8, then open bar 8-11:30 and last call was at 11:30. I thought closed bar during dinner was weird too, at first, but it made sense when I realized that carried us through the night to last call which was much preferred. Our venue did do wine service throughout dinner, though, for those who were drinking wine.

Um yeah your FH's logic is flawed! I was born and raised in Philly and I would never bring cash to a wedding besides what I was going to tip the bartender!
