Open Bar or Kegs?

So my fiancee and I are going round about the stupid alcohol situation. We have to use our venue for alcohol. He just wants to buy kegs from them and set them up in the reception area. I want to use the bar and set a certain dollar amount where people can come up and get beer and wine until the money runs out. I feel like it's classier and if we set the same limit as we would spend on the kegs: who cares? Obviously cash bar for hard liquor.

His deal is he doesn't want people ordering microbrews and wasting all the money and he doesn't want to pay ANOTHER gratuity to the bartender since the venue has added tips in everywhere.

I think pumping your own beer outside of a frat party is tacky and we are only spending a certain amount on alcohol regardless of which way we go. After it runs out guests are welcome to use the bar at their own expense. Plus I'm sure that gratuity is in there whether the bartender pours the drink or just sets the keg up.

I'd do what you can to have the bar open the entire time. You're hosting a party; your guests shouldn't have to pay for anything. Would you invite them to dinner at your house and charge them for their second glass of wine? I have heard of the bar being closed during dinner to save money, but it's also annoying because then there's a huge line right before and right after dinner. Give the people their booze!

Okay, we are having 3 kegs at our wedding, but they're under the bar, and the tap goes up through a cooler contraption called a "jockey box" - it's basically a white cooler that super chills the beer before it comes out of the tap to be served. No way would I want anyone to see the kegs, they are pretty ugly. But again, a bartender is serving, and so there is no keg out in the open. . Same with the wine and other drinks - all behind the bar, the bartender pours it all. I would get a bartender. An extra gratuity is better than a long line and trash cans with kegs in them.

I agree with the bar vs. kegs as kegs can slow things down or the tap could fail - resulting in wasted beer. Plus I'd like to have more than one option, espec if that option is Coors. I think having liquor as a cash option is fine -- I'd rather have the option to buy liquor if I wanted it than only be able to drink beer & wine (we were at a wedding a few weeks ago where at the end of the night, the beer and wine sloshing in my friend's belly got too much so she definitely appreciated being able to switch to vodka, even if she had to pay for it).
