According to liveaboutdotcom, the 1972 book Open Marriage is often considered the source for the term. The book is a marriage manual where about 20 pages are dedicated to the idea that extra-marital sexual relationships can be healthy for a marriage.

We’ve talked about it as one of my best friends was in an open marriage for a while. It’s not for us because we are both traditional and couldn’t imagine “sharing” with someone else. Not just sexually but feelings are the part that would make me uneasy too. Marriage is work and adding this kind of work isn’t something either of us want to include in our union. To each their own! I respect the way anyone wants to live and absolutely don’t ever infringe my opinion, or what is right for me, on others 💗

I completely understand. I also am not fond of the "sharing" aspect of an open marriage.
