We want our friend to go online and become an ordained minister to marry us at our ceremony. However, the NY laws are confusing and I'm not sure if Nassau County will allow this..Has anyone ever done this before in Nassau County? I'm going to call the town clerk office tomorrow but they are not...

I'm going to call the town clerk office tomorrow but they are not always the friendliest and want to be prepared in case they don't give me a straight answer. Thank you!

Hire April. She is a minister because we need to be credentialed, but she will do a non religious ceremony if that's what you want.

    now i'm really out, lol

If you use "celebrant" in your search, that may help. Most non-denominational ministers will be happy to do a non-religious ceremony for you. We were married by a retired priest, and he would have done a totally non-religious ceremony if that's what we had wanted.

In fact, here you go: http://www.frnoel.com/index.html He's in Yonkers but may be able to travel to LI. His wife is also an ordained minister and wedding officiant.

I am so confused how it would be a "waste" to hire someone to ensure your marriage is legal. Isn't the whole point to have a legal marriage?

Nassau County and Suffolk County New York do NOT allow ordained ministers who were ordained online to officiate a wedding. They may NOT register as ordained ministers. No matter what people are telling you here you need to call your town hall and have that verified. I work at the town halls registrar's office in Hempstead Long Island so i assure you these are the facts. However Queens Brooklyn Bronx Manhattan and Staten Island DO allow online ordained ministers to register and perform ceremonies. Best of luck to you.

I know i am beyond late here but maybe someone can help. i live in queens but my wedding is going to be in suffolk. if i wanted my friend to marry us, could he get ordained online, marry us at home, and then “officiate” the public ceremony to circumvent the no online ministers in LI thing?

None of us are lawyers and this is an old thread but if you believe everything to 2 officiants have written, then yes, you can do this. If the actual marriage is happening in Queens and online ordained ministers are allowed there, it is a legal marriage. The ceremony you will have in LI is just an act, a play for the sake of your friends. Because you will already be married.

Does anyone have any updated information about this particular topic? Or are the laws for Suffolk County and Nassau County still the same as in 2015? Trying to find an official source somewhere. Thanks!
