Ordered up a size but dress is snug!

SA, on June 28, 2021 at 10:23 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

I'm so annoyed! I just tried on my dress and it is snug. I told the stylist when I bought it that I wanted to size up because I wanted to gain 5-6 pounds. She pushed me to get a size 4 stating that I would fit into it perfectly (at that time), but thankfully I held firm and ordered the 6 knowing I wanted to put on a little weight. I wasn't sure about the difference in street sizing (since I'm normally a 2 or 4 in street sizes), but she showed me the measurements and it seemed to make sense.

So, fast forward 8 months and I've gained 6.5 pounds. My wedding isn't for 3 months (rescheduled due to Covid), but I wanted to do a gown inspection and see what alterations were possible (I want to add straps and make it more of a v neck) so I tried on my dress and it is snug! I don't even understand how it's possible that 6.5 pounds would take me up almost 2 dress sizes. And if so, why didn't see have me order a size 8??

The seamstress said it was fine and not to lose weight. She said she could easily let it out a bit. But, it's silk so I'm sure the thread holes will be visible. I can barely sit down in the dress right now and I can't imagine letting it out a tiny bit is going to help that much. I'll likely lose a couple of pounds by the wedding from stress, but I don't really want to lose more than 2lbs since otherwise my face gets sunken in and I lose curves, but I doubt that will make a difference.

I think losing 5lbs would probably make the size 6 dress fit perfectly, which means at no point would I have fit into the size 4 she wanted me to order. Like WTAF. I should have been a size 6 then and a size 8 now I think. (I know lots of women try to lose weight for their weddings, but I'm 41, so having a full face is more important than being as thin as possible--though I'm sure if I'd gotten married in my 20s or even early to mid 30s I'd be horrified that I gained 6.5 lbs).

So I feel like now I either have to lose weight, or have a dress with thread holes that will still be hard to sit down in...I can't believe I ordered up a size and this still happened. I know it's a slinky dress with no give and will be hard to sit down in anyway, but not so tight that it is pulling in places and feels like I might rip it if I sit down. I can't even wear anything under it. I was hoping to wear a shaper to lift my booty, but there's literally no possible way I could wear anything under it at this point. I tried to put the dress on over the booty lifter shapewear and nope nope nope...

*sigh*

Could the back be adjusted to a corset style, so you can have some play in it?

Thanks for responding ◡̈. I don’t think so. It’s the hips more than the waist. I mean yes, the waist is too tight too but she could let it out on the sides I think and then the thread holes wouldn’t be too noticeable and it wouldn’t pucker Ordered up a size but dress is snug! 2
But the sitting down issue is more to do with my booty and hips (and I’ve been working to get some booty and now I feel like I have to lose it to fit into this stupid dress). Ordered up a size but dress is snug! 3

I think I’ll just have to split the difference. Lose 3lbs and have her let it out a tiny bit. Hopefully that will work. I start alterations in august so hopefully it will be ok by then! 🤞

    😍 I love buttons 🥰
It’s a stunning dress for sure!! I totally hear what you’re saying too- that dress is not made to be sat in lol
Could you talk to your GP or even a trainer at a gym, or nutritionist about balancing weight/trimming up certain areas? Maybe you don’t need to try to lose three pounds, but maybe stop squatting, even to pick up something off the floor, and do russian twists or something?

Thank you Smiley smile. Maybe I'll talk to a trainer. Going to repost a short version since I don't know how to edit this and you were the only one who responded to my super long post!

For bridal sizes you typically order 1-2 sizes up, but it really depends on brand. I'm pretty typically a street size 6 but my wedding dress is a size 12!

Our wedding celebration was postponed due to Covid and I weighed every so slightly more for our celebration this year (132.4 lbs vs 134 lbs) and it impacted how my dress fit. About a month before our celebration this year I couldn't even sit in my dress (I was fluctuating between 136-137 lbs). The smaller you are, the more a few pounds make a difference because its a greater percentage in fluctuation. Also total weight doesn't always correlate to your measurements, so you could weigh similarly but have inches of difference in measurement which will impact how something fits. My waist is usually around 28 inches, but on a "skinny day" it might be 27 and when I'm bloated or after a meal it might be 30 inches even though the scale hasn't budged. Your hips are likely to fluctuate less rapidly but still a few pounds can make even the slightest difference and a half inch is all it takes for something to go from "fits perfectly" to "a bit too snug." I think it you are willing to lose just a couple pounds you might notice a difference in how your dress fits but without having your face look too thin.

Thank you so much! This is super helpful and yes you're totally right-- just losing 2-3 pounds shouldn't make my face too thin but could give me a bit of space. And I have been extra bloated the past week, so hopefully just getting rid of bloat would help a bit as well.

I was about 3 pounds lighter 2 months ago, and I looked at a picture of myself then v now and there is actually a pretty big difference in my stomach and hips, so losing that 3lbs might be my sweet spot. Here's hoping!

Honestly the pinholes will be barely noticeable but if losing or toning in some areas would help as well. The difference between sizes can be really small and when you gain weight you can't predict where its going to go.
