Oregon Coast mini-moon suggestions? (from Portland)

Harts&Bows, on August 15, 2017 at 4:13 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 16

Hi All, FH and I are moving to Portland, OR area right after the wedding (posted about it on here previously).

We won't be able to take our actual honeymoon until next summer because of a new job, but I would like to surprise him with a little weekend mini-moon, under say 3 hours from Portland. He's a huge fan of the redwoods and I'm pretty sure a little getaway in the trees would make his year. Any suggestions welcome. It will likely be mid- to late-October and like a Friday night to Sunday afternoon type of thing.

I really like Cape Kiwanda. You could also make a weekend out of traveling to Astoria (check out the goonies house), Cannon Beach, and then Cape Kiwanda. You'll pass through Tillamook on the way back to Portland and can stop by the cheese factory.

I live in Portland, all my life. I second what Vegaswed! suggested. Astoria, Cannon Beach, and then back through Tillamook.

If you want to go another direction then out Hood River in The Gorge or up to Timberline on Mt Hood would be good choices as well. All well within 3 hrs drive time, probably under 2.

Super helpful, guys. I think I'm going to look at the Astoria, Cannon Beach, Tillamook trip Smiley smile any restaurant/must see recommendations? I already put the creamery on the list. My FH is a big fan of reserve cheddar so I'm sure he'll love that.

Hit up Voodoo Doughnuts once you get there!

    Cannon Beach!

Check out the Pelican brewery, the bakery, haystack rock, lots to shop and do. Drive a bit south and go to Hug Point, just south is Ecola state park as well.

ETA: Just saw you mentioned trees. Do you ski or snowboard? Rent a cabin somewhere on Mt Hood, or even Timberline Lodge would be great!

ETA 2: Astoria, make sure to go to Fort George brewery and Fort Stevens state park to see the shipwreck. Cannon I listed above, and in Tillamook everyone goes to the cheese factory, but IMO I would skip Tillamook as there's not much to do there.

Voodoo donuts suck... you'll learn very quickly no one from Portland eats them.

I would recommend Astoria to stay in, and then travel to Warrenton, and Seaside. Then a day driving up the Long Beach Peninusula is a must! We have a cabin there and it's beautiful. If you like oysters go all the way to Ilwaco, and you must stop at the Country Bakery in Long Beach! Tillamook would be a great option to go to on the way home. Enjoy!

Also, even though I said in the previous thread that Portlanders won't be happy about you moving, I'd like to say welcome! I hope you're both happy here, and feel free to ask about fun stuff to do! It's never ending.

I'm so jealous! I hope you love it. I went to law school in Portland and moved away because the economy sucked. Now I'm in California and I'm dying to go back.

Side note - VooDoo donuts suck but you have to go and try them. Afterwards, go to Blue Star and get a donut that isn't covered in stale cereal.

I've been dying to check out this brewery in Tillamook that specializes in farmhouse ales if you're into craft beer:

Following! We live up in Vancouver, BC and are thinking of heading down the Oregon coast for a mini-moon (about 6 hours from us). I would definitely recommend you come up this way and visit Vancouver and Vancouver Island sometime!

Wonderful feedback, all. I found a cute little place that does tiny house rentals on the coast near Tillamook. FH is a minimalist and loves the tiny house concept so that will serve as home base for the weekend. We're definitely craft beer fans so will check out the brewery.

@VegasWed I get where you're coming from. We've lived in CA all our lives and are ready to get out. The job market may be better but cost of living is not and I work remotely, so we have some freedom there.

@Melissa I love Vancouver and FH is dying to go. Our actual honeymoon will be an Alaska cruise/adventure and I'm hoping we can leave from Vancouver so that we can spend some time there on one end or the other of it next summer.

Mo's in Cannon Beach is known for their clam chowder. They've kinda sold out in recent years, but I would still say that it's worth the visit!

@Harts&Bows - Oooo I'd move back in a heartbeat if I could work remotely! We're in Oakland and coming to terms with never being able to buy anything out here unless we move somewhere like Vallejo Smiley sad

@VegasWed - We were in Alameda before moving to the Central Coast to be closer to family last year. It has gone up exponentially in the time we have been here - amazing considering there's no real industry in the area. I feel ya. I used to own a house in Concord (it stayed with my ex-fiance). I sometimes check it's current value and it's currently worth about 150% what we paid for it in 2014 Smiley sad Go figure. Time for a fresh start out of state with the guy who was actually meant to be my partner Smiley winking
