Ostrich feathers?

Kate, on August 20, 2012 at 5:17 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 21

I'm wanting to make the ostrich-feather eiffel tower centerpieces, and was wondering where you have/ haven't had luck buying ostrich feathers.

Hey Kate ~ I tried to ask you once before, but don't remember if I saw your reply....

    1. how many tables?

    2. how much do you wish to spend per table on the centerpieces?

For this centerpiece, I'm planning 9. I have the vases, the rest I would like to spend <$300. But that may be really really optimistic. FH doesn't realize how expensive they will be to fill, so he wants more!

Not sure why it won't all post.... The rest I would like to spend less than $300 on for the feathers and maybe some lighting.

Look for fake man made feathers. they'll be cheaper than the real ones, and at that height no one will be able to tell.

So $300 total for 9 centerpieces minus the vases.

    $33 per table

    How tall are your vases?

Feathers are very expensive so good luck at finding some for cheap. I researched for over 6 months and decided to change my entire centerpiece; it takes at least 25 feathers to look right and full even if you mix the drabs, and plumes. I was over $1300 for 9 tables. Also don't know what type of vase you have but the eifel tower vases are not very sturdy and can fall over easy if you have people that my be bumping the tables or kids... good luck. I can tell you the cheapest place for feathers was at smileyme.com and UIevents. still looking at at least $400 for 200 feather plumes... good luck

I found these on amazon. 20 plumes for 21 bucks... or prettier looking ones for 28 bucks you could buy 4 or 5 sets and you would still be wayyyy under your budget! Smiley smile Hope this helps!

I bought mine from a supplier on Alibaba

    Here's what I bought for $700

    55-60cm ostrich feather $2.50each 220 $550.00

    35-40cm ostrich feather $0.72each 200 144.00

I negotiated for quite awhile with this fellow and it was the best deal I found. For the size & QTY that I wanted it would have been closer to $1600.00. I'm very happy with the quality and color

Have you looked into renting them? I know when I was considering doing feather centerpieces they were cheaper to rent than buy and make myself.

You are going to need feathers that are 18 to 21 inches long to achieve that look (I just watched a YouTube video on how they are made last night) and you will need approximately 20 feathers for each eiffel tower vase. I found 12 for $34.99 at this site:

Just a thought, but if your vases will be solid colored, like in the photo, then perhaps you can get away with using the less expensive shorter feathers by putting some stones in the vases to weigh them down and then gathering the feathers together, tying them in a group, put a dowel rod in the middle, right were the tie is and a little bit shorter than your vase, and then stick the whole thing in. So just the feathers will show, but tying or gluing them to the dowel will keep them from falling out of the vase even though they are short. If that doesn't make sense I can try to explain it better if you are interested!!

    Hi Kate,..

I just did a wedding in New Orleans with Ostrich feathers....here is the deal...they are expensive....ALIBABA has them for a decent deal. I ended up getting them from Hobby Lobby for my bride. It was $2 per feather. You will need at least 20 to get the full look. What I did was add flowers to take away from having so many feathers. Wish I had a picture to show! Well here is one...when I started out playing around with the idea...I don't have a finish product picture as of now. Hope this helps!!! Message me for any other advice!

Checkout Moonlight Feather. They have a 50% return policy. Use them and send 'em back in good condition and get half your money returned. Kinda like a rental.

    Hi everyone,

I just got married a couple of weeks ago and I am looking to sell my ostrich feathers for a fraction of the cost I paid. There are 190 in total, length is 18"-24"+. I paid $905 at Fabulous Feathers for them in January and they are in perfect condition. I'm asking $500 for them all. They are the femme wing / plume and white. I've attached a pic of my centerpieces from the wedding. Here are the links to them on eBay and Etsy:

Or, email me at *****.********@*****.***. I hope I can help someone out!

Lamplight Feather is an established and reliable supplier of wedding feathers. They are easy to work with and would likely give you an economical rental option if you call. Ask for Lacey. They ship anywhere and ship promptly. Here is the Wedding Feather page.
