Outdoor Brides: what did you walk on?

Sally, on October 3, 2014 at 11:07 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 21

My mom is worried that it's not grassy enough where I'm walking...like I'll just be on dirt. I don't have a pic, sorry, but I'll be there this Saturday so I'll bump with a pic then. I wasn't worried about it so I hadn't planned on doing anything, but now I'm thinking she may be right.

Are you guys doing aisle runners or anything? I'd be worried about everyone's heels poking through. She started going on about a big wooden board that would spring out to where everyone stands and I just had to stop the conversation there-NO way are we building a large plank this late in the game.

There are aisle runners that you can purchase that heels won't poke through. Of course, since we're not going with a grassy option anymore (the venue we went with has a brick walk way), I can't remember the website but it's something like "aislerunners.com" or "bestaislerunners.com" ... I don't know. They send you swatches and everything of the different materials, too just so you can see the color and make sure the fabric is thick enough.

Seeing a picture would be helpful. There are runners that are more carpet like so no heels would go through. If you have a floor length gown, I wouldn't want to walk across a lot of dirt. It is something to consider.

Yikes. Couldn't imagine. I walked on the grass. All the runners I saw were plastic or something I was sure my heels would poke through. We just lined the sides of the aisle with a few flower petals so it didn't look empty.

@Shelby-thank you!! I will look into them for sure! also, I had these pictures. I'm not a moron I swear, we were initially going to do the ceremony at a different spot on the location and it wasn't quite so...dirty. Now that I'm looking back at these...wow...

ETA: in the first pic, right to the right of where those two are standing is where our archway will be. And wow sorry I did not mean to post this 6 times sheesh

I will be walking on grass with rose petals on the ground. I will likely be wearing flat shoes as well. My BM insisted that I need a runner but I was more worried with it blowing around than my heel poking through.

I've heard aisle runners on the dirt ground is a bad idea because it covers holes and you can trip and fall.

I just wanted on the ground. I think aisle runners are better for inside.

I'm getting married outside as well and we are not doing a runner. I was worried that I might trip on it. It's part grass/part dirt and it will have flowers petals from the flower girls.

I haven't bought my shoes yet but I'm looking for wedges. I also noted on our wedding website that it will be outside so ladies might want to wear flats, sandals, or wedges.

I got married outside with no runner and had a big skirt, and it was fine. The aisle was grass but the wedding party was able to stand on bricks. I wore heel protectors ( www.thesolemates.com -- I think from Macy's since they had the best pricing, and I got three sizes to be safe that they'd fit my shoes).

We also ordered a ton of dehydrated rose petals from Petal Garden and put out, like, 5% before realizing it was too windy for them! Ugh -- at least we're paying-it-forward and giving them to a friend who is getting married soon!

Yeah I do not really like the idea of a runner outside...it just doesn't seem right to me, but I don't want my dress to be a mess before I even get to the reception. Don't know what to do...

They make these things for heels so they don't sink in the grass, it might help with poking aisle runner also. http://www.amazon.com/SoleMates-High-Heeler-Classic-Clear/dp/B004H5YDFC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1412351052&sr=8-2&keywords=high+heel+grass+protectors

The only other thing I can think of is a clear drop cloth, you can hide the corners of it under the chairs, but I'm not sure if it would look stupid or not. It would protect your dress though. You could put flower petals all over it.

I'm not doing an aisle runner. They aren't my style and I've heard of them being a major trip hazard anyway. I like PP's ideas of maybe lining the aisle with rose petals or something to pretty it up a bit. But otherwise it looks fine to me.

Aisle runners can be really, really tricky because your dress can bunch the aisle runner up as you're moving, and then you have a trip hazard you can't see, often while you're wearing heels and in a big, clumsy dress, to begin with . . . Get some Sole Mates and call it a day!

If that was my ceremony space, I wouldn't be worried about it. I think it's still pretty, even without the grass. There is something I like about a lovely wedding dress on a rough terrain.

I think she is worried about getting her dress dirty and/or ruined on the dirt.

@Angie, yes, but my opinion, take it or leave it, is the solution (aisle runners = trip hazard) is worse than the problem (dirty dress = basically unavoidable with an outdoor wedding).

Alright after seeing everyone's advice and opinions I'm thinking the heel protector things and no runner. I do wish it was just lush green grass but we're in FL that doesn't really happen a whole lot down here, so I'm just going to suck up that it's partially dirt. Putting an aisle down isn't going to fix that, and @Texas you're right I think my dress getting dirty is just kind of inevitable.

@Angie-thanks for the link I sent it to my girls, I'll probably get those for all of us so we're not sinking!

Sally, have you been to your venue lately? If not, can you have someone take a look and tell you how it is now?

We've had a lot of rain here in Sarasota and everything is green & lush. Not sure how much rain they've had down in Fort Myers.

Hi, my wedding theme was martini glass. We had martini candles favors, martini decoration and I walked on a martini glass runner. It was custom made, completely redone and for sale now @ http://exoticaccessoriesboutiqueshop.blogspot.com/

My guests could not believe I made it myself. Though I have to admit it was a hard labor to glue all those petals. If I could find one, I would definitely buy the runner instead of making it.
