Outdoor ceremony in ny in November

Amanda, on November 23, 2018 at 11:56 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8

Hi all!

My fiance and I are getting married in the Hudson Valley on November 7, 2020. We are thinking about maybe having an outdoor ceremony (weather and temperature permitting) but, with daylight savings, it gets dark so early.

Has anyone had an outdoor ceremony in the northeast in the fall? If so, when did you start?

Any thoughts would be helpful!
Thanks!

I’m not in the northeast but my wedding is in nov in the mountains. My ceremony time is 3:00 so we can get photos done before dark. I googled sunset times for my area and it’ll set about 5.

Seeing as how this year, it has already snowed several times in Utica where I am from and my family still is, I think you're taking a big risk planning an outdoor ceremony in November in Upstate New York.

I wouldn't plan on it. I suppose if you end up with a freak warm day (60ish at the time of the ceremony) you could move it. Just make sure that you have a chair for every butt. Also, realize that guests will be outside for upwards of 45 minutes more than the actual ceremony. A lot of people will be there half a hour early, and they won't run out after the ceremony ends (unless they are really cold). If you are running late for any reason the time will increase.

I live in NY and it's freezing in November here. This year has been colder than usual, due to climate change it's not going to improve. Unless you rent very strong outdoor heaters, you should consider the comfort of your guests.

I went to an outdoor wedding in Vegas in late April, and it was in the desert and FREEZING. Most guests went inside and watched the ceremony from the glass doors. The rest of us who sat there froze, eyes & noses running. It was a beautiful setting, but we didn't enjoy it.

Perhaps find a venue that is all glass? So you can still have the outdoor vibe you want?

    Hi all!

    Thanks for the thoughts!

The venue has spaces for an indoor and/or an outdoor ceremony (and both spaces are beautiful) and we don't have to decide on which until much closer to the day of the wedding - so we're not terribly worried on that front. We were thinking that if it was one of those freakishly warm days, we'd have it outside cause ... why not. If not, then inside it is.
I was more just wondering about what time to start the actual ceremony so that, if we do end up having an outdoor one, it's not too dark.
3pm sounds good though! Thank you, Peggy!

Amanda, I'm having the exact same debate with myself! I'm getting married in Westchester on November 8th. We also would like to have the ceremony outside if possible. I think we are going to do a first look so we get the majority of the pictures out of the way before the ceremony. Then have a ceremony starting at 4:00.

    Fingers crossed for us both!

    Hi Christen,

We eventually decided on the same! Earlier this month (I guess on our -1 year anniversary lol), we took a trip to the venue area and sat around for the sunset. 3:00 to 4:30 was fine, but 4:30 - 5:00 was too dark for us. So we're opting for a start time at 3:30 (giving people 30 minutes to come in and find their seats and such), then have the ceremony in the sunset window from 4 - 4:30.
    Fingers cross for everyone!

That’s such a good idea! I think I might go do that too!
