Outdoor ceremony inclement weather backup plans

svg, on June 4, 2017 at 11:38 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

Out of curiosity - if you are having your wedding ceremony at an outdoor location without an indoor option on-site, what is your backup plan? Especially for a small, elopement-style event.

For context, we scrapped our original plans due to a death in our family and are currently trying to figure out the logistics of a very small ceremony followed by dinner at a restaurant with our immediate family. We have an outdoor location that means a lot to us in mind, but FH isn't too crazy about moving the ceremony to a restaurant if it rains or is cold that day, etc. There may not be a better option than that that's feasible, but I figured I'd ask around for inspiration and ideas. Thanks Smiley smile

How much is your FH willing to budget for an indoor option that isn't a restaurant? I understand the desire to have a beautiful outdoor ceremony, but unless you live in San Diego, there will always be a decent chance of inclement or uncomfortable weather. You could look at art galleries, chapels or greenhouses, or look for a prettier restaurant space. Anything very attractive indoors will probably cost some money and/or require permitting, though.

My outdoor venue has an indoor option that is our backup. Still great but not our vision so fingers crossed. restaurant is better than the guests getting wet.

Our back up plan is the house. Its huge and our vendor said we could make it work if need be since there is only 35.

There are restaurants that have beautiful atmospheres that don't give off the restaurant feel. You could always look for one of those.

    Look into warehouses too

We picked our venue partially because of the separate ceremony space. There's lots of options for a beautiful outdoor ceremony, but there's a chapel onsite that would fit our guest list if needed. Since we booked both, we can make a last-minute decision to move it inside. Like, the morning of last-minute.

We decided against all venues that didn't have an appropriately sized (could contain ceremony/guests/preset tables) indoor option. Our wedding is in Nov. and we didn't want to take a chance with the ceremony not being able to be moved inside if it rained (even when we planned for Oct originally), especially since the weather has been so unpredictable this year. Ideally we want the ceremony on the back deck of the venue and the reception in the event hall.
