Outdoor Fall Dinner?

Sarah, on June 30, 2021 at 1:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 5
Hi!
I have an image of dinner and the reception that I can’t get out of my mind that I either need to be talked out of (by someone who’s not my mom) or convinced it’ll work!
I have a gorgeous greenhouse booked for my late October wedding but I’d like to have dinner outside after the indoor ceremony - the space is beautiful but I worry it could be too cramped for all the dinner tables. The reception (dessert and dancing) would be back inside. The indoor and outdoor spaces are a staircase and a door apart but a) even with space heaters, could this be too cold (I’m in the Midwest)? and b) even with dessert tables will seating and lack of “home base” close to the dance floor be too inconvenient for my guests?

Depending on your usual local weather for late October it's probably going to be too cold (I'm thinking of all of us Midwestern kids in Halloween costumes over our snowsuits 😂). I also agree that without tables in your reception space people might feel like they don't have a home base. As it gets colder throughout the night people won't want to go back outside to sit down. It sounds like a beautiful idea, I just don't think that the time of year is great for that type of thing.

Truthfully, it seems like this set up could be a bit complicated for the reception. Would you be willing to essentially “compromise” on this by having cocktail hour in the outdoor area and then the dinner and reception inside?

At that time of year it might be better to just have cocktail hour outside and then move everyone inside. I know if I’m cold I’m uncomfortable and eating wouldn’t be enjoyable.

I wouldn’t plan for October in the Midwest. It could be snowing, raining or *maybe* sunny.

I'd talk to your coordinator and have a plan for either or that can be determined the week of.

I'm also in the midwest and we're getting married and having the reception completely outdoors. It's so hit or miss, and lately it's been warmer in the fall months that typical, so it's a big gamble.

Come up with a plan for how dinner outside would work, and then maybe set-up a good handful of table inside for the dancing portion. They're not going to do a set-up for your event until the day of or night before anyways, so establishing "We'll do dinner outside as long as it's as the low is no less than 70 degrees, if it's expected to be less than that we'll do everything inside" should work. Week of you guys should have an estimate from the weather forecast on what it looks like and you can determine how to move forward from there.
