Outdoor lighting question

busybride, on January 28, 2013 at 6:58 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

So we rented a pavilion for our wedding reception, but if the weather is nice (fingers crossed) then I"d really like to set up the dance floor on the lawn next to the pavilion so that we can dance under the stars (I rented the pavilion mainly as a back up for rain, but I really just want to be outside and under the sky). I'd also like to string lights up across the dance floor. The problem is that there really aren't any trees close to the pavilion and I think it might be a little difficult string the lights from the pavilion to a tree that is 100 feet away.

So, Do any of you had any ideas about how to construct a pole type structure that is temporary and won't ruin the lawn? We will have lots of benches available to us, so we could use those as a base if we needed something. Here is a picture that I saw that does something similar. I just can't figure out exactly what they did and how they kept the poles sturdy so that they wouldn't fall with wind and still looks good.

This is EXACTLY what I want to do! I bought a bunch of white C9 christmas lights right after the holiday and got them 50 % off! I'm having the same issue as you though! The trees are kinda far from where I want to set up the dance floor and stuff, so I need an idea of poles to hold them up. I don't want to damage the lawn, since it isn't mine, or anything that costs a whole bunch. So far the best idea I have come across if 9 ft. shepherds hooks. I have found several options on amazon.com for them, but other than that I'm at a loss here! I'm going to follow your post incase someone else has a better idea!

So I spent forever looking before I posted, but found something right after I posted (figures!) Anyway, this looks like a good option. But please let me know if you find something else!

AH! Thats such a good idea! I wonder if it would be stable though... think it would be? Do you think it would be cheaper to do this than the shepherds hooks? I'm thinking of maybe getting these ones...

I think it would be sturdy if you used concrete in the bucket. I had some shepherds hooks in my backyard in the summer and they bent so much that my plants fell. The lights wouldn't be so heavy, so maybe this would work. It would be easier for sure.

Hmm, true concrete would hold up. And shepherds hooks would be easier... haha.

Maybe others have had experience with one of these options and will let us know how it went. Otherwise, I'm going to have to give it some thought!

How were you imagining attaching the lights to the shepherds hooks? I am looking for something very similar and would love to know what you find!

I was going to use the hooks as support in the middle of the lights so it would just drape over it, and on the ends I would probably use wire to secure it and then cover it with ribbon or lace, or I would hang paper lanterns from the hook as well so it blocks the view of the end of the lights.
