Outdoor Reception Food Dilemma!

Robin, on August 7, 2011 at 2:13 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 4

So our reception is going to be outside at a local park. We're not doing a big sit-down thing, just some light sandwiches and veggies/fruit, etc. The problem is keeping it cold! we're not going with a caterer just doing it all ourselves. We wanted fruit-filled ice for the punch and everything. Any ideas? Please help! I really don't want to make anybody miss the wedding just so they can bring the food...

Well you could put the fruit on ice. A trick I used to do when I had cold foods at an event (I used to be in Girl Scouts) was to take two different sizes of metal pans (like the aluminum baking ones you get in the stores). Fill the bigger one with some ice and salt. Then put the smaller one in the bigger one with the ice. Keeps everythign in the smaller pan nice and cold. Hope that helps. =]

Obviously you don't want to fill the big pan all the way with ice, but like half way-ish and then smoosh the little pan in there so its kind of surrounded by ice. you know

The Dollar Tree has those metal pans for $1 if that helps.
    Sm - Small Pan

    Large Pan

Just to give you an idea.

Well as long as you eat right after the ceremony the food should stay cold

    Hi Christine!

I'm new to wedding wire, and this interaction is nice!

Take photos before the ceremony, to prevent a long time between setting the food out and eating.... Have a family member or friend set the table nicely and set out the food right before you walk down the isle so they don't miss your ceremony. Ceremony will only last a few minutes, and photos are already done, so only 20 minutes or so with the food out.

Depending on how casual your wedding is, metal pans will work to keep food cool, when used with ice (I agree with Christine).

Other semi-formal option are chaffing dishes (only for larger items- one for sandwiches, one for fruit and cheese), they cost about 25-40 dollars, you can buy them from Sam's. They keep food cold or hot. Fill the bottom of the tray with ice and try to set up the buffet area in a nice shady spot. As newlyweds, you will be entertaining in the future and the chaffing dishes will come in handy during the holidays. Congrats!
