Outdoor wedding Cake = bugs?

Chrissy, on April 18, 2015 at 10:23 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 29

Does anyone have any cheap DIY ideas for keeping bugs out of our cake when its outside? Did anyone previously have a problem with bugs and their cake/desserts or is this something I shouldn't even worry about? My friend is making the cake and I don't want bugs to ruin it.

I dunno if this would be cheap or not, but maybe you could construct a frame (out of what idk I'm no good at that sorta thing...pvc pipe maybe) and drape it with tulle or something like that to create a sorta pretty tent-like thing around it?

I was thinking tulle but I don't know how to attach it. I also want it to be shear enough so people can see the cake still.

Maybe get some type of birdcage that the cake will fit in and Ben drape the tulle over it?

That is simple! Thanks! Do you think it will mess up the cake if its touching it/windy? I'm trying to plan for all cases of weather lol.

If you have a gazebo or something to hang it off of you could use a canopy net like the ones they put in little girls' rooms

Maybe i can make something with wire and tulle. so the ribs of the cage will be wider than a bird cage and it wont touch it. Thanks for the brainstorming help guys! keep it coming.lol

They actually make things for cakes to keep bugs out of them outdoors.

I have a tent rental but i don't know exactly how the structure of it is laid out. Like the supports and beams. Im afraid to rely on tying something to it and then not being able to the day of.

I read online that for outdoor weddings, fondant is best to use because it won't melt. Not sure about the bugs though...

Fondant will dry out and crack though if left uncovered.

I went to an outdoor wedding several years back and her wedding cake was nearly covered in little black bugs! We literally had to scrape off the icing because the bugs (gnats I guess) were everywhere. I read to prevent this, for starters, to use fondant instead of regular icing. Bugs can't stick to fondant, so that helps. Our baker actually frosts normally and then covers with fondant. This also supposedly keeps the icing from melting in the heat. The other thing I saw is sort of like the picture above, but the tulle is hanging down overhead instead of directly on the cake, which is on the cake table, so the tulle can be attached at the bottom and doesn't touch the cake, like some of the ones above.

I was going to suggest something like Cassidy. You could use organza for something more flowy but still sheer enough to see through.

I don't know how your area is, but we luckily didn't have any issues with bugs due to the time of the year. And I live in Georgia. Maybe the same cards will play out for you.

When my uncle remarried, it was an outdoor wedding in July and there were no issues with bugs.

Lol I had to look up what organza was. I think it will look better than tulle. We are in PA so I think I should be prepared for bugs. I also plan to have a bug spray/suntan lotion area for anyone who needs it.
