Outer/Inner envelope addressing....wait, now I'm confused??

Fawn, on July 7, 2012 at 12:46 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7

Ok, I know I've seen address etiquette instructions on how to address your outer and inner envelopes, especially if you're inviting children. But I just realized that I don't have an inner envelope and never really saw an option for it when ordering my invitations. (I did get them from VP, which we all know is the cheap way to do it.)

Are other brides not using an inner envelope? What is it's purpose? And what do you think is the best way to indicate that we are inviting or not inviting children of the couple on the outer envelope?

I assume that putting on the RSVP cards, "we have reserved 4 seats in your honor" couples will get that we're inviting them and their 2 kids...I hope...

Hey Fawn... When I addressed my friends invites (I did the calligraphy for her) she didn't have inner envelopes either. I wrote the names of the guests invited on the RSVP card. (so what they tell you to put on the inner envelope, I put that on the rsvp card)

We did not use inner envelopes. I don't think Cards and Pockets even makes them. The purpose of them is to name each invited person but you can do that on the mailing envelope and the RSVP card so they're not necessary. They're usually used in more formal/fancy invitation suites.

Just indicate each person invited on the mailing envelope. For a family with children that you're inviting:

Mr. & Mrs. James Smith - formal

    Susan, Adam

Nancy & James Smith - informal

    Susan, Adam

If you're not inviting the children, just don't name them and make it clear you've reserved 2 seats at the reception. I wrote in every person's name on our RSVP cards to avoid confusion, too.

Hi Fawn! I'm using inner/outer envelopes since the outer envelopes may get damaged during printing. It's definitely not necessary, but I decided to splurge a bit on the invites. It also allowed me to incorporate my wedding colors into the invite by having blossom pink outer envelopes, while keeping the actual invitations primarily ivory and white.

But I know many people opt not to do inner envelopes, and their invites look beautiful!

If you choose single envelopes, you can put the first names of those invited right below the household name in the address section:

    The Smith Family

    John, Jane and Jackson

If you would prefer to go the traditional route, you may be able to find envelopes one size larger to use for outer envelopes.

We did not address our inner envelopes, we left them blank.

For families we addressed it as "Smith Family"

for married couples we did "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"

for couples living together we did "Mr. Smith and Ms. Jones"

and for singles we just did their name and put word of mouth they have a plus one.

I am a little confused...Please help. If I only put the names of the guest including children on the front of the rsvp envelope without any addres, where exactly do I put the return address at on the rsvp envelope?

The RSVP envelope should only have your address in the center front. The recipient will add their return address if they wish in the upper left corner. The guest names can be included on the outer envelope as shown above.
