Outside Reception and Wedding Cake

Kayla, on June 11, 2021 at 4:43 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 21

For those of you who had an outside reception ( ours is in May of 2022) how well did your cakes hold up? I got scared when I read something that said cakes can start melting depending on what you have on them...yikes!

Your bakery should be able to help you find a cake that will survive the weather. Just don’t choose an ice cream cake.

Here's an article I found, but your bakery should have options!

Yes during hot humid days cakes can definitely start to fall apart. You can either choose to do a naked cake like this. Or maybe your bakery will have a faux cake option. Our wedding is outside in the summer and our bakery is giving us sheet cake to serve and have a faux cake made out of foam and fondant for display and there will be a small section of real cake for my fiance and I to cut and feed each other.

Semi naked or naked would work best if your looking to have a cake outside for a long period of time. Naked cakes tend to be drier so be careful with that as well.

Now that we switched venues and our ceremony and reception are both outside, we are not going to have a cake on display (Only cake in the kitchen for serving). As a result, it will need to be as decorated.. Our wedding is at 2 PM and I can’t have cake sitting out in the elements and with insects. So we have an alternate plan for display at the reception.

My SIL had an outdoor wedding in May. It was so hot! Her cake fell over while we were eating dinner.

Thank you, our venue does have an airbnb rental and if I decide to rent that out maybe I can put the cake in there until it's cutting time.

The bottom layer I think. I know they were able to serve some. And the baker basically said too bad. They wouldn’t come do anything.

We had an outdoor (shaded) reception in July.

Our baker put extra dowels in the cake, and delivered it as late/close to the reception as he possibly could to minimize the time it spent outside.

Even so, it did start leaning, and we ended up cutting the cake in the middle of dinner to be safe.

If it's too hot for a cake outside, it's probably too hot for a reception outside.

Our venue told us they will keep the cake inside until close to cake cutting time, at which point they will take it outside. This should help preserve the cake for a few hours. Maybe check with your venue if this is an option:
