Unfortunately, most couples budget an average of $16,000 for their wedding and 40% of couples go over their budget! Based on the total ceremony and reception costs, couples end up spending an average of $216 per guest.

Is your wedding budget in the same ballpark? Are you over or under $27,000? *you don't have to share exact numbers!!

Way way over. Originally I wanted a $15k budget but it has grown since then.

Getting married in California is pretty expensive but our families are very traditional as well. They are helping us though so overall we're bumped our budget around $40,000.

That's not including engagement rings or honeymoon.

Under, by a lot! We were paying for it ourselves and both just graduated this year from college. Our budget is only $7,500.

Waaaaaay over lol. I’m in NYC and everything is expensive. We set a budget m and also set percentages of that budget we are allowing to each category. So far we are under everything we budgeted for so I’m hoping this continues and brings our overall budget down. Will put it right back into the savings lol

I've heard that California is more expensive! Did the number of people you're inviting make a difference?

We initially said we would never spend over 10k and threw that out there as an initial number that was a max for us... that was until we started pricing things and realized that didn’t align with our vision.

We’re somewhere around 18K. That includes a destination wedding, honeymoon, rings, and a back home brunch we’ll be hosting with our extended families in about two months. So when it’s all said and done, still under the average!

Hi Melinda!! Thanks for sharing! This is actually great advice, pricing things before setting an official budget is so helpful. Initially, you may think you want to spend a certain amount, but like you said once you start pricing it can change.

Over. We wanted to spend 30K, when we actually sat down and calculate what it would cost for what we wanted, we either had to revise our wants or consider expanding our budget. We decided to expand.

To expand, having read some comments, the average cost for JUST the reception where I’m from is $170+ a person for “turnkey” packages. In my city, the vast majority of reception halls are owned by a few companies who all set relatively similar prices, the spaces all look the same, food is identical and sadly mediocre. One reception hall told me it was $200 a person for a minimum of 200 people, another one was $225 for four hours of open bar. Unfortunately restaurants are not cheaper. I felt like if I’m spending 25K+ for a reception, it should at least represent our style. We decided to rent a venue and get rentals and catering, but even this is expensive and we’re still paying $230 a head for the reception only, but we got to customize every aspect of our wedding.

    We're cheap...

In all I think we spent less than $5k on it all. Maybe even $4k

Hoping to stay under or at this number. So far the estimate is 25.5k, but we are trying to make budget friendly cuts wherever possible!
