Painted globe as a Guestbook

Melissa, on May 14, 2019 at 4:10 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 4
So if you paint a globe to use as a Guestbook, when you then sign it with sharpie does it rub the paint off? I want to paint a globe but my aunt who was going to do it for me is worried that the paint will chip under the pressure of the sharpies. Thought?

You should be okay. I am doing this too and I plan to have the guests use sharpies.

    Hi Melissa!

Globe guest books are such a cool alternative to a traditional guest book!

This is a great question and definitely something to consider when creating the globe.

I would imagine you would need to use something to seal the paint with to avoid this happening, for example Mod Podge.

Does the instructions you are following with the globe mention anything like this?

It will also depend on the paint used to paint the globe and what material the globe is made out of. For example, if you use a wooden sphere instead of a paper globe, and cover it with acrylic craft paint, you should be good to go for the guests to sign it, then seal it after the wedding so it doesn't get smudged.

If the globe you plan to use has a smooth surface already, consider using an all in one primer/spray paint to paint it, and it should be okay. If the paint doesn't flake off the globe after you paint it, then I doubt the sharpie will cause a problem unless guests press REALLY hard when they sign. I've got a lot of experience with painting for crafts, but I haven't ever painted a globe before, so I'm not 100% sure.

I am doing the same. I used store bought globes that had an almost foil like finish and acrylic craft paint. It took a few coats (3-4) to cover the existing lines but it doesn’t appear that it would chip under a sharpie. Maybe try a paint pen for signing?
