Painting Glass Vases

Celia, on August 10, 2018 at 9:22 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7

I ned to put decorations on some glass vases I bought for centerpieces, but the list of paints I could use is long and I can't find a list on the internet that ranks them all. The tutorials I've found use everything from spray paints, to sharpies, to contact paper. There isn't one that is more or less expensive than the other, so I think I'd like to go with whichever paint will give me the best quality. So far the only thing I'm thinking is that since I'll have to use a stencil for spray paint, that might end up being more expensive/less clean. However, everything else requires a steady hand so it would have to be FH's project instead of mine. Anyone else paint on glass for their wedding? Any tips?

I painted jars and uses valspar chalk paint. You should do a few layers. The first 2 look rough but they start looking pretty good. Also I used these black sponge paint brushes and then sprayed it with a sealer so the paint stays on there

I honestly think that craft paint would be the best. I would. worry about sharpies, spray paint could be messy, but you can purchase craft paint from Wal-Mart to specialty stores. If you are looking for perfect then I would use a stencil, tape it down, paint, and then remove the stencil to create the clean crisp lines. If you are going for an organic, vintage, or rustic look, hand painting them using a stencil loosely would be nice also.

I used a silver metallic paint then I spray painted a silver glimmer over my mason jars. I purchased both from Michael's.

Are you trying to color the vases all over, or add something detailed? That'll have a big impact on what type of paint is best. Can we see your inspo photo?

I'm not really working off of inspiration pictures, more so just my own brain. We've got tall vases, and we'll be putting fairy lights and possibly paper flowers in them. The paint is for details. Our theme is Sci-fi/space and we want to paint gold insignias on the vases to go along with table numbers(one table is the Autobots, one is Starfleet, etc).

So cool! I love that idea. In that case since a lot of detail work is needed I feel like spraypaint will make it difficult for you to get the desired effect. I'd look for a product that you can apply with a paint brush or from a pen.

    Hi there, Celia!

Did you end up finding a paint that works well on glass?! I've seen some paints that are designated for glass projects at Michael's in their paint aisle! I would love to hear/see how your DIY came out!!
