Painting wine glasses DIY!?

Kristyn, on July 14, 2011 at 3:32 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

I'm off for my weekly round to my favorite craft stores and I'm going to purchase the supplies to ATTEMPT painting my own wine glasses for the wedding party. This could quite possibly end up a disaster and look like a first grader did the painting. Has anyone done this? Any tips or suggestions? I'm HOPING for a zebra print base and their names on the cup... we'll see how it goes!!

This is what I'm hoping for, only no paint on the stem and names, not a design:

My mom and i did this several years back. We got the glasses at a restaurant supply store and got glass paint from Michaels that you bake on. You can put them through the dishwasher if you use that kind!

It was a fun project, make sure you get good brushes. You can do a template if you want and put it on the inside of the glass to follow. Just a thought. Good luck! Make sure to post pics!!

Mrs. S. To Be, good call on putting a stencil on the inside of the glass, I have apparently been having an "I'm an idiot" moment, because I've been thinking... okay, do I cut out a stencil and tape it on... duh you can see through a glass, put it on the inside LOL. I bought wine glasses at the dollar store, they'll do the job... now for the paint and brushes... and for FH to get home so I can escape without the kids!! Smiley smile

Is it really worth the pain when you could just but them. They're only 7.00 each

Im not painting glasses but i am painting vases. I have cylinder vases that i cannot use or return (thanks to my second guessing of the centerpieces) so i am painting my girls names on and they have a place to put their bouquets at the reception and they can take them home. I painted a little vase last night just to see how it would look when dried, then Ill paint the real thing!

I did that for my girls.

Make sure you get the right paint, and decide if you want to bake them, or put a glaze thing over it. Make sure all the paints are the same type!

I bake mine, and that worked out perfect, until I found out that one of the colors wasn't the baking kind, and that is the only color that washed off! lol

I forget what its called, but theres a certain type of paint you want to get (comes in little bottles-any craft store will have it) thats designed for glass, and afterword you can *bake* it in the oven so the paint will stay on.

i did this for my bm and I printed out their names with the type and size i wanted, then just held that to the inside of the glass.

I also bought cheapo wine glasses i found at goodwill to practice on first. my first attempt was horrible! but it turned out in the end

@Soon to be - what a great idea! I think I'll steal it (if you don't mind). Smiley smile

Good luck with the wine glass painting. Let us know how it turns out! Smiley smile

You know, using a tipped tube, you should be able to draw the design on fairly easy rather than going with a paintbrush.. Looks like a really fun project! I love painting! Will this be for you and your FH or for your BMs?

I am really wanting to do this for my wedding party to use at the wedding, but I think only the girls would appreciate them. So I may do them for the bridesmaids as part of their gift. Please post some pictures as soon as they're done and any tips you might have learned.

I got all the supplies but I'm super bitchy tonight for some reason, so to avoid throwing wine glasses and swearing at the paint, I'm going to give it a try tomorrow. Smiley winking
