I don't drink alcohol so having a couple drinks isn't an option, but I was prescribed Valium for possible plane panic attacks, and given the side affects I'm kind of nervous to take it! Lol. I'm just scared of everything apparently!

If you've never taken Valium before I recommend you try it on an evening when you don't have any responsibilities. If you're already anxious about flying and trying a new medication, give it a try to see how your body reacts before getting in a plane. This will also ensure you don't have a reaction to the new medication with medical attention 1000ft below.

Of course consult your health care provider before making medical decisions.

    What are the side effects?!

I too deal with anxiety on planes but I have to admit I'm way more calm flying with FH or family than I am friends/for work.

Bring a coloring book, definitely follow some soothing ambient music playlists (preferably without words), and yes TAKE THE MEDS. I'm a little jealous-- I've never talked to my dr about an anti anxiety med because I hardly ever fly.

Europe is MAGICAL. You're going to have the best time and traveling with FH is going to be so romantic. Sending positive vibes from WA!

Another person with a fear of plane related vomiting (mine or others).

    Somethings I find very helpful:

    1. Place a clear cup or bottle of some liquid on your tray table and watch it when there is turbulence. Nine times out of ten, the water isn't sloshing around nearly as much as it would be if you were in a car or on a bus. Noticing that you aren't being jostled THAT much compared to movements you deal with every day makes it a little less scary.

    2. Similar, imagine you are on a bus or a train going over potholes.

    3. Move with the turbulence. Instinct in the uncomfortable moment is to clench up, but that makes the outside movements more noticable. Try wiggling/shimmying or moving in some other way to keep yourself from freezing. Obviously this works much better if you have headphones and people think you are just really into your music...

If you're too nervous about taking the Valium, a Tylenol PM usually knocks me out for a few hours. As others have said, there is a reason it was prescribed!

That's crazy about being RX'ed Valium for anxiety! I was prescribed two pills for my anxiety when I had to have oral surgery, and it really relaxed me.. I mean REALLY I didn't care about ONE. SINGLE. THING., I was in a zombie like state, lol

I am prescribed Xanax as my regular anxiety, I take it often when flying and on road trips, it's just enough to really take that edge off, make you relax but still be able to function (watch a movie, read a book, etc), That's just me though.
